Subject: Auth/Assoc/Connect events coming before CMD_CONNECT response (hwsim)

Hi,

I have noticed this sometimes happening with mac80211_hwsim where the
Authenticate, Associate, and Connect events arrive in userspace before
the actual response to CMD_CONNECT. It seems to be a scheduling/timing
problem as turning on logging in hostapd or other applications "fixes"
the issue.

I have not seen this happen on any physical hardware, only with
mac80211_hwsim. But still, this does cause our testing framework to
fail, as IWD handles this case by assuming another userspace daemon is
running. It seems there needs to be some kind of wait/yield in
mac80211_hwsim so that the response to CMD_CONNECT comes before these
other events as it should.

Below is a relevant log of what is happening starting with the
CMD_CONNECT request. Note that in this case the connection fails, and
this is expected for this specific test. Still, the connect response
comes after all these other events.

Yeah, sounds like a consequence of immediately handling the frames
through.

I guess you could "fix" that by running with wmediumd?

Or adding some kind of fake air latency into hwsim.

We do run with wmediumd, although I hadn't looking into this much. The
README claims to support frame delay:

"wmediumd allows simulating frame loss and delay."

But I can't actually find a way to configure that. It only seems to
have configuration values for frame loss between stations and SNR, no
explicit delay. If a delay is possible it would be easier to integrate
this into our current test setup....

... if wmediumd doesn't support a frame delay then this may be the
route we have to go.

Thanks,
James

Well, I was sort of assuming that even just running wmediumd would
introduce the latency of another userspace roundtrip, and, perhaps more
importantly, disconnect the code paths.

I didn't really think you need any additional delay, and yes, I don't
think wmediumd supports adding additional delay, but it does add its own
fake medium acquisition delay.

So maybe that means my theory was wrong?

I was actually incorrect thinking we used wmediumd, we don't :) We have
our own hwsim thing that is effectively taking the place of wmediumd.
And with this I added a very small delay to resending out the frames
and it totally fixed the issue.

Thanks,
James

Oh. But my theory was that even purely the roundtrip out to userspace
and back would make the issue go away, so I guess I was still wrong.

I guess that's more realistic anyway :)
