Subject: Simultaneous 2.4 GHz WiFi and Bluetooth issue on Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260

Hi!

My laptop (Dell Precision Workstation 7510) with an Intel Dual Band
Wireless-AC 8260 (see lspci and lsusb output attached), is suffering
from issues that I believe are related to the driver, or possibly the
firmware/hardware.

Specifically, when testing with Debian Sid, I am unable to connect to
2.4 GHz WiFi and Bluetooth at the same time. I can successfully use
both independently, and 5 GHz WiFi and Bluetooth works fine. It's been
a number of months, but I believe simultaneous 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth
worked fine in the past, and has slowly degraded.

Under Windows 10, the hardware appears to work without issue.
Additionally, I believe I managed to warm-reboot from Windows 10 to
Linux (with Bluetooth connected), and was able to continue using the
same 2.4 GHz WiFi and Bluetooth audio sink without issue.

When blueman-manager isn't hanging (it tends to do that a lot in this
situation), I am sometimes able to connect to 2.4 GHz WiFi and Bluetooth
device for a short while before the Bluetooth stack disconnects the
device. Usually this requires removing and re-pairing the device.

After blueman-manager/the entire Bluetooth stack hangs, or if I want to
use Bluetooth and wired ethernet, I have to disconnect and disable the
WiFi interface before Bluetooth will behave like I
expect.(NetworkManager -> disconnect WiFi; # ip l set dev wlp2s0 down)

Usually at this point, the entered name for the Bluetooth host is
disregarded and the host is reported as "bluemoon universal bluetooth tool."

I would like to diagnose this, determining it as a software/firmware
issue and resolving it via supplying/testing patches, or a hardware
issue and proceed to replace it. Let me know how I can be of
assistance; capturing bus communications from Windows and Linux or however.

Regards,
Nathan Schulte

I re-verified this, and I must have done something wrong the first go
around. It looks like the last commit in the log for the file is indeed
what's packaged.

This was reported in the past. Please make sure you have the latest BT
firmware files.
Ubuntu may not be shipping the newest BT firmware files. You can find them here:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git

Specifically, I can see that the BT firmware files were updated not long ago:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/commit/?id=9cb49be0eecf1de2c020e9de235a4fb5fd6665d7

Then you'll need a cold reboot.

Regardless of the BT firmware version thing which is a pure Intel
problem, I have heard
about problems in the BT stack itself but I can't help about this.

This seems to have resolved the issue. Interestingly, the firmware
(version...) shipped with Debian Sid is not in the official
linux-firmware.git repository; its md5sum doesn't match any of prior
versions of the file:

Emmanuel, how can I determine the firmware version ("FW Build" and/or
"Release Version") from a given file (e.g. ibt-11-5.sfi/.ddc)?

Though I've never really used the Bluetooth stack until this hardware,
it seems the stack/blueman-* applications only behave oddly when there's
problems with the firmware: never an issue when not using simultaneous
2.4 GHz WiFi + Bluetooth, or with this latest firmware, or approx. 2
years ago when I first started using this setup.

Thanks,
Nate
