Subject: [PATCH v2 2/4] cfg80211: Pass new RSSI level in CQM RSSI notification

Update the drivers to pass the RSSI level as a cfg80211_cqm_rssi_notify
parameter and pass this value to userspace in a new nl80211 attribute.
This helps both userspace and also helps in the implementation of the
multiple RSSI thresholds CQM mechanism.

Note for marvell/mwifiex I pass 0 for the RSSI value because the new
RSSI value is not available to the driver at the time of the
cfg80211_cqm_rssi_notify call, but the driver queries the new value
immediately after that, so it is actually available just a moment later
if we wanted to defer caling cfg80211_cqm_rssi_notify until that moment.
Without this, the new cfg80211 code (patch 3) will call .get_station
which will send a duplicate HostCmd_CMD_RSSI_INFO command to the hardware.

Subject: [PATCH v2 4/4] mac80211: Add set_cqm_rssi_range_config

Support .set_cqm_rssi_range_config if the beacons are available for
processing in mac80211. There's no reason that this couldn't be
offloaded by mac80211-based drivers but there's no driver method for
that added in this patch as I don't have the hardware.

Subject: [PATCH v2 3/4] cfg80211: Accept multiple RSSI thresholds for CQM

Change the SET CQM command's RSSI threshold attribute to accept any
number of thresholds as a sorted array. The API should be backwards
compatible so that if one s32 threshold value is passed, the old
mechanism is enabled. The netlink event generated is the same in both
cases.

cfg80211 handles an arbitrary number of RSSI thresholds but drivers have
to provide a method (set_cqm_rssi_range_config) that configures a range
set by a high and a low value. Drivers have to call back when the RSSI
goes out of that range and there's no additional event every time the
range is reconfigured as there was with the current API.

This method doesn't have a hysteresis parameter because there's no
benefit to the cfg80211 code from having the hysteresis be handled by
hardware/driver in terms of the number of wakeups. At the same time
it would likely be less consistent between drivers if offloaded or
done in the drivers.

Should userspace really just get -EOPNOTSUPP back?

Also, this whole business with using an array in the existing
NL80211_ATTR_CQM_RSSI_THOLD is not very backward compatible, because an
old kernel would interpret this as just a single value (the first one
in your array) - ignoring entirely the fact that you requested
multiple.

Thus, you either need an nl80211 protocol feature bit (enum
nl80211_protocol_features) or a new attribute, or so, I think.

You definitely need error checking here :)

Right - it doesn't even have that concept, and I'm not sure that really
makes sense.

I think we should just leave the new flag up to the driver then. The
only driver using per-interface beacon filtering (iwlwifi, afaik) will
either need to convert to actually handle it in the beacon filtering
case (which is the normal case anyway).

When multiple levels aren't supported, and it's requesting them. Rather
than, for example, being able to determine up-front (through a feature
flag) whether it's supported or not.

Well, it's even more complicated than that because mac80211 may have
the callback but still not be able to support it, with filtering,
perhaps? Not quite sure now.

Doing an (extended) feature flag this would address both points (also
the first, see above) in a single feature flag. Adding the protocol
feature flag would've addressed only the basic netlink attribute length
issue - so if we agree on the first point that a feature flag would be
useful for userspace to predict usability of the feature then we should
have it per device.

True, I'd assumed that netlink would check for exact attribute length
with NLA_S32.

I'll add the feature bit but I wonder if it's better as a
driver/device feature (enum nl80211_ext_feature_index) so that it can
take into account whether rdev->set_cqm_rssi_range_config is set.

Ok.

With the basic mac80211 implementation in my patch 4/4 this feature
should be set when IEEE80211_VIF_BEACON_FILTER is not set. The
problem with a nl80211_ext_feature is that it's per wiphy instead of
per interface. So in the case mac80211, it would need to be set if
all interfaces can accept lists of thresholds and that can change
dynamically as interfaces are added. And nl80211 has no per-interface
features.

I wonder if it's better to add a ieee80211_hw_flags flag to advertise
this feature per wiphy, or, as an approximation, set the flag based on
the default interface that is created in ieee80211_register_hw.

Best regards
