Subject: [2.5.53] So sloowwwww......

Hello,

I'm just playing a little bit with Kernel 2.5.53, and I've been
afraid of finding it quite slow...

Well, no real way to estimate how much, so I've decided to do the
following :
make clean
time make bzImage

Of course, there is only one user, no one else is logged on the machine,
and nothing is running.

Results are :
real 109m19.321s
user 104m26.119s
sys 3m52.936s

Of course, this is little value if not possible to compare, so here
is the same done running a kernel 2.4.20, but still compiling the
same kernel :
time make bzImage
...
Kernel: arch/i386/boot/bzImage is ready

real 7m29.133s
user 5m23.660s
sys 0m19.080s

Hardware is the same for both, and as far as I know, I have no kernel
debug enabled when running 2.5.53.
Here is a copy of the .config file :

Hello,

This is an ext3 partition, and a SCSI disk :
4 [18:10] rol@donald:/kernels> df .
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 10320888 753828 9042724 8% /kernels

Do you think I should try on some other ?
The problem is that the system is *globally* slow, and compiling
the kernel is just a way to prove it. Starting KDE has become a real
pain (so slow screen detects no more video and enter Energy Saving
mode before reactivating and switching to Graphic mode).

Paul

That's correct, I have a P4.
Maybe something related to the CPU, but I hardly see what it can
be...

Not a bad report, but you didn't give any info on the machine
configuration in terms of:

- CPU type and speed
- memory
- disk

I'd guess power management, a runaway interrupt, bad mtrr settings,
problems with the memory map decoding or Hyperthreading.

Check
/proc/interrupts
/proc/mtrr
The memory detection results at the top of dmesg
disable apm, acpi.
Check anything Hyperthreading related in dmesg.

Also, toggle the APIC config settings.

Here is the result with a kernel without APM and ACPI :

a Xeon, so I guess there is no hyperthreading available) :

You are correct, something coming out of APM/ACPI is breaking
performance.

I'm going to try to identify more closely...

Just to be sure, have you got DMA enabled on your disks ?

What is the result of:

# hdparm -i /dev/hda
# hdparm -i /dev/hdb

Problem is much more likely to be related to ACPI.

Mount a tmpfs drive and try building the kernel there to rule out scsi
or disc issues. (You've got .5Gb I think? Might not want to run kde as
well; just build from a console)

But I think your ACPI guess is probably not far wrong.

Well, I did made another kernel without ACPI and with APM,
and it is working fine.

To summarize :
- ACPI Enumeration only is fine
- More functionnalities from ACPI is bad.

If someone has an idea and wants me to make tests, please contact
me...

Paul

Same scsi controller on a tbird Athlon
1300 Mhz with 1GB of RAM, and i found it (2.5.53 compiled with gcc 3.2.1)
a little faster (full kernel preemption is not enabled),
except for some process using a lot of fork().

Did you try using acpi=no-idle in your kernel append line (if using
lilo) and see what difference that makes? It works in 2.4.

Followed your advice, and due to lack of documentation regarding
the acpi= kernel parameters, I tried :
- acpi=no-idle
- acpi=noidle
- acpi=no_idle
without success on a 2.5.54 kernel.

2.5.54 and ACPI (not only ACPI enumaration) is definitely slow.

This one (above) is the correct syntax.

Too bad...
Does this mean there is no easy way to have ACPI running correctly
on my machine ?
If anyone knows ACPI code, please tell me if you want me to run
some specific code to understand what's going on...

Sorry, I was looking at old source code.
apm=no-idle isn't in 2.5.54.

| | - acpi=noidle
| | - acpi=no_idle
| | without success on a 2.5.54 kernel.
| |
| | 2.5.54 and ACPI (not only ACPI enumaration) is definitely slow.

I'll have to leave that to someone else.

I've seen this in multiple different places, and it seems to be a royal
pain in the butt. Could you log this in Bugzilla (bugme.osdl.org) so
we can track it and get it fixed? I started to log it myself, but realised
I don't really have the required information, or the data to reproduce it.
Bugs logged under Power Mangement / ACPI will automatically go to the ACPI
maintainer ...

Oh, and if you could dump /proc/interrupts, that might help ... last time
I recall some conversation about it generating millions of interrupts,
though that might be fixed by now ...

Thanks,

M

Could whoever removed it comment on either (a) what problem it caused or
(b) what to use instead? It seems like a reasonable option to avoid
problems with individual systems.

No problem, I'll do it.
