[+ indicates stuff that went to Marcelo, o stuff that has not,
* indicates stuff that is merged in mainstream now, X stuff that proved
bad and was dropped out, - indicates stuff not relevant to the main tree]

The HP merge is now down to 3503 lines pending
IDE status
Chasing two reports of strange ide-scsi crashes
Still some Promise glitches - need to review merge carefully
Need to double check SiS code versus older SiS code.
Sometimes we now turn DMA off excessively for simplex devices

No corruption cases except known hardware incompatibilities
that broke before

The insmod of IDE drivers isnt in yet. I've been rather busy so it didn't
make the time. However anyone who wants should be able to fill in the
other bits of the ide pci driver registration logic to finish it off.

Once I get a bit of time I'll resync with Marcelo and push him various

This includes some wrong documentation updates:

+ kHTTPd is *not* currently compatible with tmpfs. Trying to serve
+ files stored on a tmpfs partition is known to cause kernel oopses
+ as of 2.4.18. This is due to the same problem that prevents sendfile()
+ from being usable with tmpfs. A tmpfs patch is floating around that seems
+ to fix this, but has not been released as of 27 May 2002.
+ kHTTPD does work fine with ramfs, though.

This is _not_ a problem with tmpfs, but with khttpd. The same problem
is also present with nay filesystem that uses the pagecache but not
generic_file_read or a non-trivial wrapper around generic_file_read, such
as smbfs, ncpff, nfs, (open-)gfs, or xfs. This might not always mean
those filesystems don't work at all with khttpd, but at least it opens
race conditions. khttpd uses do_generic_file_read directly instead of
using a file operation, and the problem is that do_generic_file_read
should never have been exported to allow such a layering violation.
sendfile() and the loop driver have the same issue. In 2.5 of those
only the loop issue is still existant, and I plan to fix that one and
make do_generic_file_read static.

+ There is debate about whether to remove kHTTPd from the main
+ kernel sources. This will probably happen in the 2.5 kernel series,
+ after which khttpd will still be available as a patch.

khttpd is gone in 2.5

FYI, gmac is now obsolete and is replaced by the sungem
driver.

I'll soon send a patch removing it entirely from the kernel
source tree as there is no case where it works better than
sungem on a given HW.

Ben.

Indeed, I banged it hard on my PowerBook G4 and it works like
a charm and even in cases where gmac had occasional problems
like on wakeup or media-changes.

What are your plans to visualise the gmac removal in the config?
At the moment it's not exactly obvious that sungem will work
in place for gmac.

Not too sure about that, though Tom Rini sent me a patch that
will "upgrade" an existing config, I may just merge that and
remove the visible option.

Ben.

If it was x86 I'd say "keep it for 2.4, delete it in 2.5, in the 2.4 one
add a printk advising people to switch driver". I don't know how the ppc
world is accustomed to handling this though

Well, we aren't not really accustomed to obsoleting a driver yet ;)

My original intend was just that (keep it in 2.4 and delete it in 2.5)
but now, working sungem has been around 2.4 for quite some time and new
machines aren't properly suported by it etc...

The printk big bold warning on driver load may be the best option for 2.4

Ben.

a call to usb_stor_transfer everywhere except here... Is it for
a reason?

Backround:
A long time ago (linux-2.4.19-pre4-ac2) I got a USB disk
related hang (all processes accessing it stuck in state D).
It happened while reading from a USB-storage device
(disk attached to a USB-IDE bridge).

The system log has just these two errors:
usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 3, frame# 1660
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout

That problem happened only once. I had to reboot in order
to continue use the device.

Is it possible that the missing check is the cause for that
hang?

Itai, submit this to Matt. I saw it too, coming from our Japan
support office. They claim a probem with installs from USB CD-ROM.
The report was very murky and I was unable to get any details
or confirm it, but it seems independent at least.
