. More CPU scheduler changes

. The regression with reaim which was due to the CPU scheduler changes
seems to have largely gone away, but it was never a large effect in my
testing. Needs retesting please.

. A series of Cardbus driver updates.

For some reason, the ACPI support depends on local apic.
If you don't set "Local APIC support on uniprocessors" you can't enter in
the "ACPI Support" menu.

Is this really necessary ?

there's a problem with make xconfig:

defiant:/usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test3-mm3# make xconfig
CC scripts/empty.o
MKELF scripts/elfconfig.h
HOSTCC scripts/file2alias.o
HOSTCC scripts/modpost.o
HOSTLD scripts/modpost
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `scripts/kconfig/qconf.c', needed by
`scripts/kconfig/qconf'. Stop.
make: *** [xconfig] Error 2

also, the ACPI entries seems vanished in the .config, and the menu is
not accessible.
With the old 2.6.0-test3-mm2 no problem at all.

umm, Sam?

You'll need to enable CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC to work around this.

There is a large change to drivers/acpi/Kconfig in Linus's post-test3 tree.

If you look at it, yes, everything in there has become dependent on
X86_LOCAL_APIC. It looks like a mistake.

I can't, if I enable it, my system freezes at boot time (before activate
the framebuffer), disabling framebuffer to see the output, the last
message is "Calibrating APIC timer", also if I pass noapic to the kernel
boot params, the system freezes at the same point.

This patch works for me (against bk6)

While compiling with gcc-3.2:

arch/i386/kernel/dmi_scan.c:167: warning: `dmi_dump_system'
defined but not used

This warning happens because the only call to
dmi_dump_system() happens when CONFIG_ACPI_BOOT is defined,
but I _not_ have ACPI options enabled.

I'm getting the some warning in bk tree.

thanks,

Is this going to stay in -mm, or will it eventually propogate to stock?

If it does, can this be added to the to-do list of things to fix before 2.6.0?

I'd hate to see this feature lost...

This patch against 2.6.0-test3-mm3 adds calls to the
security_task_to_inode hook to the pid*_revalidate functions to ensure
that the inode security field is also updated appropriately for
/proc/pid inodes. This corresponds with the uid/gid update performed by
the proc-pid-setuid-ownership-fix.patch that is already in -mm3.

wow, you're awake ;)

I'm not sure that the /proc/fd ownership patch is the correct solution to
that bug yet; we'll see. I'll include your change, thanks.

That depends if someone does any work on it in the next few days I guess.
Right now we're getting mysterious oopses down inside fine_inode_fast,
which is unacceptable.

Show me a workload in which it makes a measurable difference.

But no, it won't get forgotten.

Looks good. There are some ACPI bits to clean up after, but with the
preliminary ACPI workarounds and the cyclone timer one-liner, 16x/64GB
x440's come up and run userspace just fine with XKVA enabled (haven't
bothered with NUMA-Q since the setup there is inconvenient for others).
I think it was all wrapped up by the combination of the pmd and TSS
fixes (at least to get these boxen going).

inode->i_gid = 0;

Testing underway. We had some STP .config breakage, which has slowed things
down. Results
should be available end-of-today, or tomorrow.

Yes, good catch. That's an omission from the original
proc-pid-setuid-ownership-fix.patch, not mine. How about the patch
below, against 2.6.0-test3-mm3, which both addresses the omission from
the original patch and adds the security hook call. Note that the
security hook call is still unconditional, as in proc_pid_make_inode;
the security module can decide how it wants to deal with non-dumpable
tasks when setting the inode security field.

Subject: Re: [PATCH] Call security hook from pid*_revalidate

A slightly updated version of the same patch against 2.6.0-test3-mm3 is
below. Avoid clearing the i_uid and i_gid in revalidate unless those
are truly the right values, and don't bother testing for PROC_PID_INO in
pid_fd_revalidate. Of course, these changes only ensure proper updating
when revalidate is called, so already opened files can still be read
under the old attributes until the file is looked up again...

Third version of the same patch against 2.6.0-test3-mm3, this time using
proc_type rather than directly extracting the type from the inode
number.

I think it fixed security problem of original patch. Thanks.

Have some tests completed.
Results are ..interesting.
All results:
http://developer.osdl.org/cliffw/reaim/index.html

On a gross level, the delta has indeed shrunk:
STP 4-CPU
STP id PLM# KernelName Workfile MaxJPM MaxUser Host Change
277851 2063 2.6.0-test3-mm3 new_dbase 5327.15 88 stp4-000 0.00
277455 2049 linux-2.6.0-test3 new_dbase 5324.95 92 stp4-000 -0.04

However, if we look at the detail within the runs, the two kernels do run
differently. It's not really good/bad, just different.

Basically, -mm3 runs a little slower, but steadier.
-test3 has bigger peaks and valleys, the average between the two over the run comes
out about the same. Example:

Num children JPM/-mm3 JPM/-test3
44 5079.77 5183.81
48 5130.43 4853.96
52 5102.86 5161.39

Numbers taken from:
-test3 -> http://khack.osdl.org/stp/277455/results/allruns.html
-mm3 -> http://khack.osdl.org/stp/277851/results/allruns.html

Sorry to be so vague..more tests are underway.

Code location:
bk://developer.osdl.org/osdl-aim-7
tarball:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/re-aim-7

Run parameters:

./reaim -s$CPU_COUNT -x -t -i$CPU_COUNT -f workfile.new_dbase -r3 -b -l./stp.config
./reaim -s$CPU_COUNT -q -t -i$CPU_COUNT -f workfile.new_dbase -r3 -b -l./stp.config
(3 runs each, average of all 6 reported)
