Here are the patches that were in the 2.6.11.9 and 2.6.11.10 releases,
syncing up your tree with the -stable tree. (I can't base the -stable
tree off of your git tree due to the lack of a "real" 2.6.11 in your
tree, this will change once 2.6.12 is out.)
Please pull from:
rsync://rsync.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/stable-2.6.git/
Full patches will be sent to the linux-kernel mailing list, if anyone
wants to see them.

[PATCH] Fix root hole in raw device
[Patch] Fix raw device ioctl pass-through
Raw character devices are supposed to pass ioctls through to the block
devices they are bound to. Unfortunately, they are using the wrong
function for this: ioctl_by_bdev(), instead of blkdev_ioctl().
ioctl_by_bdev() performs a set_fs(KERNEL_DS) before calling the ioctl,
redirecting the user-space buffer access to the kernel address space.
This is, needless to say, a bad thing.
This was noticed first on s390, where raw IO was non-functioning. The
s390 driver config does not actually allow raw IO to be enabled, which
was the first part of the problem. Secondly, the s390 kernel address
space is distinct from user, causing legal raw ioctls to fail. I've
reproduced this on a kernel built with 4G:4G split on x86, which fails
in the same way (-EFAULT if the address does not exist kernel-side;
returns success without actually populating the user buffer if it does.)
The patch below fixes both the config and address-space problems. It's
based closely on a patch by Jan Glauber <[email protected]>, which has
been tested on s390 at IBM. I've tested it on x86 4G:4G (split address
space) and x86_64 (common address space).
Kernel-address-space access has been assigned CAN-2005-1264.

[PATCH] Fix root hole in pktcdvd
ioctl_by_bdev may only be used INSIDE the kernel. If the "arg" argument
refers to memory that is accessed by put_user/get_user in the ioctl
function, the memory needs to be in the kernel address space (that's the
set_fs(KERNEL_DS) doing in the ioctl_by_bdev). This works on i386 because
even with set_fs(KERNEL_DS) the user space memory is still accessible with
put_user/get_user. That is not true for s390. In short the ioctl
implementation of the pktcdvd device driver is horribly broken.

That is not quite correct. You are passing very odd filp to ->ioctl()...
Old variant gave NULL, which is also not too nice, though.

Same comment as for previous patch. I'll take a look at that sucker,
it might happen to be OK, seeing that most of the bdev ->ioctl() instances
ignore file argument and we might get away with passing odd stuff to
anything that could occur here.

Oh, lovely - pkt_open() opens underlying device, unless we already have our
device opened. Guess what happens if you open() with O_RDONLY and
then - with O_RDWR?

2.4 already does it in a cleaner manner :
err = -EINVAL;
if (b && b->bd_inode && b->bd_op && b->bd_op->ioctl) {
err = b->bd_op->ioctl(b->bd_inode, NULL, command, arg);
}
return err;

Sorry, I forgot it...
I meant the same with the NULL. Is it OK ?

Huh? These checks are useless and you are still passing a struct file *
that has nothing to do with what ->ioctl() expects.

What is that if () doing there? bdev->bd_inode is *never* NULL - it's
set when we allocate the bdev and never changed; the code setting it
is
if (inode->i_state & I_NEW) {
bdev->bd_contains = NULL;
bdev->bd_inode = inode;
so you are not going to have it NULL, no matter what.
And filp->private_data is set in raw_open() by
filp->private_data = bdev;
a couple of lines after
filp->f_mapping = bdev->bd_inode->i_mapping;
so it's not going to be NULL either.

Which would you prefer? I guess that if there _are_ going to be
problems, we'd be better off finding them early by passing in the NULL
value.

Ok, so, do you suggest we just pass NULL in there, or do you have a
better suggestion?

For now I'd rather pass NULL. Longer term (== post 2.6.12, since There Is No
2.7(tm)) - just remove the struct file * argument of bdev ioctl and have
int flags used instead, with "opened for write" and "opened non-blocking"
passed in it. And switch the inode argument to bdev...

You get I/O errors when you submit write requests, which is definitely
not good. I don't know if it also has security implications.
A check got lost in the char dev control device conversion patch. The
patch below fixes it.
-
If you tried to open a packet device first in read-only mode and then
a second time in read-write mode, the second open succeeded even
though the device was not correctly set up for writing. If you then
tried to write data to the device, the writes would fail with I/O
errors.
This patch prevents that problem by making the second open fail with
-EBUSY.

Switching the inode argument to bdev would first require doing the
same switch in cdrom_ioctl(), which the patch below does.
-
This patch changes cdrom_ioctl() to take a struct block_device pointer
instead of a struct inode pointer.
