Have you run checkpatch on this code? It produces many errors due to
your "return" usage for one.. The usual style of return is not to use
parentheses since it's really not a function ..

The line I quoted above gives the following error,

ERROR: return is not a function, parentheses are not required
#266: FILE: drivers/scsi/bfa/bfa_cb_ioim_macros.h:132:
+ return (*(union bfi_addr_u *) &addr);

First of all I'd consider making your code consistent with respect to
the return statements .. I noticed that you sometimes use the
parentheses sometimes not .. Since it's more with Linux style I'd just
remove all the extra parentheses..

Checkpatch produces many other errors in your code .. If you haven't
already evaluated those errors, I'd do go through each patch and review
the errors (and the warnings) that it produces since checkpatch can give
you a fairly mechanical view into how well your code matches the Linux
coding style. The less the output from checkpatch the better ..

checkpatch is just a helper tool - and stuff like that using
brackets to make it clearer is just a trivial matter of style.

It would be rather more useful if instead of parroting checkpatch results
(which people can generate themselves) you concentrated on analysis the
actual code and structure for any flaws and design details.

Trivia like coding style (unless particularly bad) are something for the
maintainer just to say "fix those odd bits up and I'll merge it" at the
*end*.

True, but I do care about the style of code .. You may not care about it
which is fine ..

They can generate them , but don't seem too .. For me, these problems
distract from the overall design .. I find it hard to focus on reviewing
larger topics like that when I know the trivial code clean ups have not
been done.. It's much easier to review clean code than code which has
lots of style problems.

Well, isn't this the end for this patch set? He's asking for inclusion
in this thread, and it's been submitted once before already .. He has
also received enough comments for another round , so there isn't any
reason not to add the style clean ups, if any, to the next one.

Hi Daniel,

I did run checkpatch.pl and it didn't report any ERROR or WARNING. Do you use any specific flags?

Thanks

No nothing special .. I run it in the following way,

./scripts/checkpatch.pl this-is-the-test.patch

or

cat this-is-the-test.patch | ./scripts/checkpatch.pl -

how did you run it? Usually it will report something like the following
if it finds nothing,

total: 0 errors, 0 warnings, XXX lines checked

Your patch has no obvious style problems and is ready for submission.

Thanks. I found the problem. I tried the latest checkpatch in 2.6.31 and it generates a lot of ERRORs about putting parentheses for return. I have been using an older version of checkpatch for patch submission all the time, and therefore I didn't see any problem. I will fix them and resubmit the patch.

Actually, could you send an incremental diff ... I'll put this in the
tree because it's about time it got wider testing in linux-next.

Thanks James, I am working on the fix, and I will send an incremental diff.
