Subject: [PATCH v2 0/7] Pinctrl support for Zynq

Hi all,

here is v2 of this series. On the functional side, adding the support
for USB mux groups is probably the biggest change. Most other changes
are mostly cosmetic (typos, function names, documentation, ...).
More detailed changelogs are included with the respective patches.

Regarding DT, I separated pinconf from pinmux nodes and updated
documentation accordingly to enforce that separation.
The parser, though, still handles everything in order to not break
backwards compatibility.

And finally, as Linus requested, I patched one of the Qualcomm drivers
to use the features added in 'pinctrl: pinconf-generic: Allow driver to
specify DT params'. I don't have that HW so, that is compile tested only
and may take some more work to work on HW.

So much for the changes. What didn't change? I left the parts that have
been described as "kludgy" as they were, in order to maintain backwards
compatibility and not break current users of pinconf-generic
functionality.

The audience is again limited to pinctrl stakeholders.

Subject: [PATCH v2 1/7] pinctrl: pinconf-generic: Infer map type from DT property

With the new 'groups' property, the DT parser can infer the map type
from the fact whether 'pins' or 'groups' is used to specify the pin
group to work on.
To maintain backwards compatibitliy with current usage of the DT
binding, this is only done when an invalid map type is passed to the
parsing function.

Subject: [PATCH v2 2/7] pinctrl: pinconf-generic: Allow driver to specify DT params

Additionally to the generic DT parameters, allow drivers to provide
driver-specific DT parameters to be used with the generic parser
infrastructure.

To achieve this 'struct pinctrl_desc' is extended to pass custom pinconf
option to the core. In order to pass this kind of information, the
related data structures - 'struct pinconf_generic_dt_params',
'pin_config_item' - are moved from pinconf internals to the
pinconf-generic header.

Additionally pinconfg-generic is refactored to not only iterate over the
generic pinconf parameters but also take the parameters into account
that are provided through the driver's 'struct pinctrl_desc'.
In particular 'pinconf_generic_parse_dt_config()' and
'pinconf_generic_dump' helpers are split into two parts each. In order
to have a more generic helper that can be used to process the generic
parameters as well as the driver-specific ones.

Subject: [PATCH v2 7/7] pinctrl: qcom-spmi-gpio: Migrate to pinconf-generic

Instead of the driver caring about implementation details like device
tree, just provide information about driver specific pinconf parameters
to pinconf-generic which takes care of parsing the DT.

+Zynq's pin configuration nodes act as a container for an arbitrary number of
+subnodes. Each of these subnodes represents some desired configuration for a
+pin, a group, or a list of pins or groups. This configuration can include the
+mux function to select on those pin(s)/group(s), and various pin configuration
+parameters, such as pull-up, slew rate, etc.
+
+Each configuration node can consist of multiple nodes describing the pinmux and
+pinconf options. Those nodes can be pinmux nodes or pinconf nodes.
+
+The name of each subnode is not important; all subnodes should be enumerated
+and processed purely based on their content.
+
+Required properties for pinmux nodes are:
+ - groups: A list of pinmux groups.
+ - function: The name of a pinmux function to activate for the specified set
+ of groups.
+
+Required properties for configuration nodes:
+One of:
+ - pins: a list of pin names
+ - groups: A list of pinmux groups.

It's supposed to be pinctrl/devel. And that seems to be mostly true. I
just saw there are two rockchip patches in my branch which shouldn't be.
Guess some rebase went wrong (or the devel branch was rewritten?).

But I am *very* fond of this series, and I appreciate your patches
as *lot* Sören.

So my plan is to merge your v3 patch set after the merge window
or whenever you have it ready, with the Zynq driver on top and
the dependent AMlogic driver too.

Then we spend the next kernel cycle hashing this out and
putting some polished generic code in place so we get some
order.

This will likely set the pattern for how we expect ACPI pin controllers
to behave too, so it is work of great importance.

I hope I can count on you to hang in there and keep driving
those patches!

I'll try to provide a deeper look at the indivudual patches now.

Sounds great! After bringing it so far, I wasn't planning of giving up
now :)

The approach you chose sounds good to me. I was currently waiting to see
whether there are a few more change requests coming before sending v3.
The few comments that came in so far I have already fixed up. Since it's
not going to make it into this merge window there may be some more time
now, but in general, I could send v3 any time.

Looking at it, it's not that straight forward. We only pass one size to
the core, so the core cannot really check that the number of entries in
both arrays are equal. And passing the size of both looks a little
redundant to me.
That would put the driver in charge of making sure these arrays are
aligned.

With the change given below, it would at least trigger a compiler
warning. I'll add that to the next iteration of this series.
Longer term, merging those arrays, as you suggested, may be a better
solution.

I looked at merging these arrays. Unfortunately that doesn't work that
easy.
There are two arrays. The first one establishes a mapping from
strings used in DT to specify pinconf parameters to a pinconf parameter.
This array has some entries which map to the same pinconf parameter.
E.g. 'input-enable' and 'input-disable', the only difference in those
entries is the resulting value of the parameter.

The second array establishes a debugfs representation for each pinconf
parameter.
So, for the core parameters, the number of entries in these arrays
differ.

For this patch, I was assuming that these arrays match in size. I'd keep
it the way it is now and if it turns out that this is not sufficient,
passing the size of the second array too is an easy addition.
