Subject: aic7xxx driver failing (2.4.19-ac4)

Howdy. I'm having major fits with trying to use the aic7xxx driver with an
Adaptec AHA2948UW. Based on how I try to load it and how the system
rebooted, it either oopses or fails to detect any devices. I have a Zip250
and HP DDS2 dat drive installed. All the bits do work: this box also boot
$OTHER_OS('ms') with nary a problem. I've had some challenges getting a
respectiable oops out of the thing: the only way I can get a reliable one is
compiling scsi_mod & aic7xxx into the kernel, the ksymoops the output on a
kernel w/o the bits.

I've a full explanation of the stupid crap I have to do for this at
http://home.earthlink.net/~raptorfan/crash/.

Below is the guts of the oops (if they're relevant and valid) and the
majority of my bugreport: I just don't know if all this in vain. I should
note aic7xxx_old does detect things fine, but has some argument with st
enough to not allow me to use the tape drive (can use the zip drive fine).

This is all against 2.4.19-ac4 but had the same problems trying 2.4.20-rc2

Thanks for any help,

-r

--crash report--
Linux-kernel auto-report generator version 0.00+

[1.] One line summary of the problem:
crash trying to use 'current' aic7xxx driver (not aic7xxx_old)

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
aic7xxx either OOPSes on boot, module load, or simply errors out
scanning the SCSI bus looking for devices (and then fails to
detect said devices). The information is based on a 2.4.19-ac4
kernel but the same results happen trying to use 2.4.20-rc2.

[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):
aic7xxx, oops, scsi, kernel, 2.4.19-ac4

[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):
Linux version 2.4.19-ac4 (root@otus) (gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release))
#32 Sun Nov 17 09:24:32 EST 2002

[5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information

[6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the
problem (if possible):
either compile aic7xxx into the kernel or 'modprobe aic7xxx'

[7.] Environment

[7.1.] Software (add the output of the ver_linux script here)
If some fields are empty or look unusual you may have an old version.
Compare to the current minimal requirements in Documentation/Changes.

Can you try to update your system with the driver version here:

http://people.freebsd.org/~gibbs/linux/tarballs/aic79xx-linux-2.4.tar.gz

The files are for the latest linux-2.4 tree, but should be easily
modified to work with the kernel you are using.

A slight improvement: the kernel no longer oopses but still never completely
makes it thru boot.

I've attached the dmesg from the box at boot with the drivers compiled
in-kernel. The card appears to be detected, it appears to go through the IDs
and does find my devices but hangs after the last message. If I build the
driver as a module, the insmod hangs loading the module. Switching to
another terminal and viewing dmesg output show a similar message as
attached, except in this order:

- detection of the card ("scsi0: Adaptec AIC7XXX" etc etc)
- detection of the devices ("host 0 channel 0 id 2 lun 0\n Vendor:HP" etc
etc)
- ONE instance of the failed detection message

I waited for ~ 5 minutes before deciding the detection was dead and
rebooted. insmod was the still hung and a 'lsmod' showed the aic7xxx driver
stuck as '(initializing).'

.. but at least there's no more oops. :)

Also, I find it interesting my dat drive is discovered as ID2.. when it's
ID3. This is confirmed by visual check, the adaptec card's boot detection
and $OTHER_OS using the drive. The Zipdrive is at ID6 (and appears to be
detected correctly.

-r

ps.. thanks for the help so far.

Are you running with memory mapped I/O enabled? Since you have a VIA
chipset, using memory mapped I/O can be problematic. If using PIO
works for you, I'd like to work with you toward making the memory mapped
I/O test in the driver automatically detect configurations such as yours
that do not function correctly when mem I/O is used. You should be able
to disable mmap I/O in 6.2.21 via kernel config or by setting an aic7xxx
option on the command line (nomemio I think, but I don't have the sources
in front of me right now).
