Subject: Kernels > 2.6.1-mm3 do not boot.

Hello.
I am unable to boot with kernels greater than 2.6.1-mm3. I do not recall if
mm3 booted or not, but I know for sure that mm4 and rc1-mm1 are broken for
me. When I try to boot the selected kernel I see uncompressing
kernel.....then booting kernel.
and then, nothing. It stops all activity. I still see the message
uncompressing kernel, the screen doesn't go blank or anything.
The new CPU options confuse me, (Why multiple CPU's?) Usually that is the
problem when the kernel cant boot so early. I tried a kernel with ONLY 386
selected, ONLY athlon selected, and one with all the cpu's athlon and below
(architecture wise, not below menu-wise)
I tried setting/unsetting the regparam and booting with acpi=off and
disabling/enabling PnP in my BIOS. I am
What has changed in these later versions?

Confirmed, the same problem when I recompiled and tried (just now)

2.6.1-rc1-mm1
2.6.1-rc1-mm2

What changed? Why am I suddenly locked out of all newer kernel versions?
I am using vanilla sources with nothing other than mm patches.

Please check exactly between which two kernel versions the problem
first appeared.

Please send the .config of the last kernel that worked for you.

The current kernel I am using. Last kernel I trust.
#uname -a
Linux eric 2.6.1-mm1 #1 SMP Thu Jan 15 22:07:05 CST 2004 i686 unknown unknown
GNU/Linux

Just booted 2.6.1-mm2 Bare config. Just bzipped, patched and set cpu-type.
Works ok
Just booted 2.6.1-mm3 Bare config also. Worked
Trying 2.6.1-mm4. This is where the new cpu options are introduced. I selected
586 only. I am attaching the .config that failed. Please note though, in all
these kernels I just tested+booted I did NO custom configuration beyond
selecting a CPU type. I did not boot them to my root fs, because that would
require SCSI drivers and FS drivers. I only booted them to a kernel panic
(unable to mount root fs...obviously)
You can emulate any of my tests by unzipping the vanilla kernel, patching to
a mm series and seleting a cpu type.
I have a strange suspicion that the new cpu options are to blame. I am by no
means a kernel hacker, but I've never had a problem like this where I am
locked out of a whole series of kernels, or where they would stop booting.
Possibly the new CPU selection options are generating bad code with my gcc?

I am pasting 2 configs inline the e-mail here. The first is one similar to
the options I always use for my 2.6 kernels. SMP/my scsi drivers, etc. The
second one is the .config of the 2.6.1-mm4 kernel that did not boot. No
kernel after this series will boot with any config (that I know of). Possibly
you can suggest some options for unravelling this mystery. I am also
including a lspci at the end. See the lkml thread for this for my cpuinfo. I
feel bad making this message as long as it is already.

Thanks in advance for you time and effort on this problem.

After diffing two of your .config's, I don't see how the CPU selection
options might have caused this.

I'm sorry that I don't have a real idea where to search for the
problems, only a few thoughts how to get nearer to finding it:

Please try 2.6.2-rc1 (without any -mm patch).

If this kernel works, please try -mm4 with disabled SMP support and
support for the Athlon (and no other CPUs).
If you compile with
make V=1
the kernel build is more verbose. If this kernel doesn't boot, please
send the complete gcc call for the compilation of a file (it doesn't
matter which file, e.g. one under fs/).

Confirmed here also...
the latest working kernel is 2.6.1-mm3; the first non working is 2.6.1-mm4
The symptom is that the booting sequence stops right after "Uncompressing..".
I've cofnigured -mm4 using .config and "make oldconfig", answering when
needed.
The only relevant changed config options are related to CPU, but I haven't
looked in configure files.
I've attached both .config (working-mm3/not working 2.6.2-rc1-mm3).
I'm now trying to compile 2.6.2-rc1-mm3, but the problem is here from
2.6.1-mm4 (not rc).
I've also tried several choices for CPU (386->P4), without any change.
The system is a P4/HT, chipset i875p, 1Gb ram
If more information/test are needed, just let me know.

I sent the following to Eric:

The same is true for your .config's, so i you have some spare time these
tests would be interesting.

What's your gcc version ("gcc --version")?

Could you back out ("patch -p1 -R < ..." or manually remove the lines)
the patch below and retry?

TIA

Does it work if you disable -funit-at-a-time? I had a problem with that
totally wedging a kernel right after the decompressing/loading messages.

Yep, and now it works :)
Now I'm running 2.6.1-mm4, tested both UP and SMP (SMT) and it boots just
fine. Later I'll try with more recents releases, but I'm pretty sure that
these will work.

Many thanks, the patch has solved this issue :)

Yep, the patch posted by Adrian removed -funit-at-a-time and now it works,
thanks.

Many thanks to Eric and you for your help in tracking the problem down!

@Andi,Andrew:

It seems use-funit-at-a-time breaks with distributions shipping a gcc
3.3 that supports -funit-at-a-time.

Th patch below replaces use-funit-at-a-time.patch and uses
scripts/gcc-version.sh from add-config-for-mregparm-3-ng* to use
-funit-at-a-time only with gcc >= 3.4 .

It works for me with the hammer branch gcc 3.3 with -funit-at-a-time.

Are you sure the exception table sorting patch was properly applied?

I disagree with that change.

The Fedora gcc-ssa compiler has this problem, but claims to be 3.5. So
at a minimum, we'd need to document the Fedora breakage and stick a

Was that patch an x86 issue as well, or only on the 64-bit boxes? And if it
is a x86 issue, can you repost what *you* think it is (as opposed to what the -mm
patch thinks it is?)

The latest bk tree (post 2.6.2rc1) has a full solution that should cover
all architectures.

AFAIK there is a known problem on MIPS (not related to the exception tables)

If someone is seeing crashes with a BK snapshot from today and -funit-at-a-time
please send me the decoded oops.

Can you post your patch please? I've been running into this too. I'm
compiling 2.6.2-rc1-mm3 right now after having commented out the
-funit-at-a-time in Makefile. I'm running gcc 3.3.3 on Debian with
the stable/unstable/testing branches.

Of course I posted my email before I read the entire rest of the chain
of messages on this.

Thanks,

It's not in there, since my Makefile had the -funit-at-a-time stuff,
which I've now commented out. Still compiling, and waiting to do
areboot to test it out.

Sure, the darn thing wouldn't boot, it kept Oopsing with the
test_wp_bit oops (that I just posted more details about).

More confirmation as I get it.

I'd say so. There are no extable patches in current -mm.

Well there doesn't seem much doubt that -funit-at-a-time causes Fabio's
kernel to fail. Do we know exactly which compiler he is using?

Well, I'm using gcc (GCC) 3.3.1 (Mandrake Linux 9.2 3.3.1-2mdk), provided
with Mandrake 9.2. If more details about configuration are needed please let
me know.

Let's take this from the start:

what kernel version are you running exactly?
what oops are you seeing?
does official 2.6.2rc1 (not mm) with -funit-at-a-time enabled in the Makefile
work?

I'd say that's a different issue:
The gcc 3.3 in debian unstable doesn't know about -funit-at-a-time, and
it should therefore not be affected by this problem.

I meant the patch to sort the exception tables, which fixes the
only problem I know that unit-at-a-time triggered on i386

Looks like the sort extable patch was missing. Are you 100%
sure you booted the right kernel?

2.6.2-rc1 has Paul Mackerras' generalized sort extable patch already.

I just booted an 2.6.2-rc1-mm3 kernel compiled with an -funit-at-a-time capable
gcc 3 and it worked just fine.

I remember trying 2.6.1-mm4 + your sort extable patch (i386 specific
version) on Mandrake 9.2 -> no boot. Removing -funit-at-a-time cured
problem. I didn't have time to investigate it more (like trying
patched vanilla). Just FYI.

Oh yes i forgot...

Also please save your .config, do a make distclean and compile again and try
if it still happens. Sometimes compile dirs get messed up and produce
miscompilations.

I've tried all -mm versions for 2.6.1 and 2.6.2-rc1
The latest working one without any patch was 2.6.1-mm3
2.6.2-rc1-mm3 didn't work.

no oops at all. The boot stops right after "Uncompressing.." line

Ok, then it is something in -mm*. I would suspect the new weird CPU
configuration stuff. Can you double check you configured your CPU correctly?
Or do you use 4/4? If yes turn that off.

It's different and it is weird and probably easy to screw up.

It's just that CPU configuration errors often cause problems before
the console is running. And we unfortunately still don't have
early printk on i386, which makes it hard to diagnose.

Can you apply the appended patch and boot with earlyprintk=serial
(+ serial console with 38400 baud on ttyS0 and a terminal program
that does logging on the other side). If you don't have a serial
console you can also use earlyprintk=vga , but that would require
writing down what's on the screen.

What does it say?

I must say that it does seem to be causing quite a few problems and doesn't
have a very good benefit:breakage ratio. Maybe we should say that 2.6 has
sucky CPU selection and leave it for 2.7.

As I recall (and I'll test tonight) it didn't make a difference if I
chose just the PIII config, or if I compiled for I386 on up to PIII
using the new selection stuff. Check the .config I posted before.

I've got a laptop here, so maybe I can configure the serial console
and get a copy of the boot messages so I can post them. We'll see if
I get a chance to do this tongiht.

Right now, 2.6.1-mm5 is compiling, I should be testing it, then
2.6.2-rc1 in an hour.

It certainly didn't seem to make a difference, after doing a make
mrproper and then putting my .config back in place, it still doesn't
boot. I'm not doing anything funky in grub, here's my boot options:

title 2.6.2-rc1-mm3
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.2-rc1-mm3 root=/dev/sda2 ro
savedefault
boot

I point this out since the last Oops I got on boot said something
about kernel_options, but since I didn't write it down, that's not a
good report.

I'll see about falling back to 2.6.1-mm5 and then to 2.6.2-rc1 and
seeing what happens. I could even try going back to 2.6.1 plain as
well.

Any suggestions? Or any other info I can provide here?

Andi,

I've got the serial cable setu, now I'm compiling 2.6.2-rc1 based on
the config from 2.6.1-mm5, which is what I'm running right now. So it
looks like my issue is possibly with the new CPU selection stuff in
2.6.2-rc1 and later -mm kernels. Hopefully I'll get this up and
running soon.

Thanks for your help and the early printk patch.

Here's the copied odwn output from tty0, my regular console:

Booting '2.6.2-rc1'

Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /vmlinux-2.6.2-rc1 root=sda2 ro console=ttyS0,38400n8

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.

And that's it. I'll see about applying the patch to the various
2.6.2-rc1-mm kernels as well, and possibly to 2.6.2-rc2, which I just
got downloaded. Hmmm... I'll try that one first actually and try to
get more info out tonight.

The .config's were already sent, and they seemed to be correct.

The cpu selection patch is perhaps a bit prominent and therefore the
first suspect in case of problems. After looking at yesterday's problems
(including looking through the .config's) I'd claim that my cpu
selection changes are definitely not guilty. Besides that it broke
"allnoconfig" I haven't yet seen it having big problems caused.

Your impression might be different, and you are the one who makes the
decisions.

Just a quick followup, but 2.6.2-rc2 also hung in the exact same spot,
after printing out the HighMem zone: line.

Falling back to 2.6.1-mm5 for now. More testing tomorrow evening when
I get a chance.

Ok, it didn't oops. Just hung early. Probably needs some printks
to track it down.

And the problem really goes away when you disable -funit-at-a-time ?

Does this fix the test_wp_bit oops?

He apparently doesn't have an test_wp_bit oops, but just an hang
very early (after mem_init according to early printk)

Just to follow up here. On kernels 2.6.2-rc1 and 2.6.2-rc2, it just
hangs on bootup and doesn't give any Oops output.

When I tried out 2.6.2-rc1-mm[1,2,3], it would start booting, but
oops immediately with the one I posted before, but I've re-created
here.

I'm at work now, so I won't be able to do any tests besides remote
kernel compiles during the day.

My plan is to apply the patch from Andrew where sort_main_extable() is
moved up above mem_init() to both 2.6.2-rc2 and to 2.6.2-rc1-mm3 and
see what happens.

This was from both 2.6.2-rc1 and 2.6.2-rc2, and since the later
doesn't have the -funit-at-time declaration in the Makefile, I don't
think that's the problem.

My gcc version is:

gcc.real (GCC) 3.3.3 20040110 (prerelease) (Debian)

Well, you have some different problem then. I was assuming you used
-funit-at-a-time because you posted on the unit-at-a-time thread.
I don't know what's wrong with your kernel, sorry.

If it happened to me here I would add printks to the early kernel
initialisation until I figured out where it hangs.
(it's somewhere after mem_init and before console_init in
init/main.c:start_kernel). You could try that, together with earlyprintk.

It seems a little bit different from my situation: 2.6.2-rcX (basically non
-mm versions) boots and works just fine (besides some oopses on shutdown, but
this is another story, I'll investigate further on this).
-mm series, both 2.6.2-rcX-mmY and 2.6.1-mmZ with Z > 3 hangs after
decompressing image, if I leave -funit-at-time in Makefile. I can redo any
of these tests, I can also use a serial interface to capture any "hidden"
oops, if someone sends me any needed patch to show some data (i.e. early
printk) and the desired tests.

The same holds for me :)

Yes, it fixes my test_wp_bit oops. But NOW, when booting 2.6.2-rc1-mm3 (which
i pathed removing -funit-at-a-time and the wp_but oops patch) I get an oops
derefrencing null pointer in blkdev_reread_part.

I booted normal and with vga=ask acpi=off
Here is a close approxamation of what I wrote down by hand.

Let me know if you need more (or more accurate) debugging info. I am very
sorry if I have copied something down incorrectly. If I have, I guess its a
great time to learn how to set a up serial console :)

It is likely that this can be fixed by reverting

No, nor does this fix my booting problem(s) with 2.6.2-rc2. I'm now
back and running 2.6.1-mm5 without any problems. Is there any further
info I can give, or patches I can apply? I've applied the early
printk patch, the above patch, and I'm at a loss where the problem is.

It hangs at the following spot:

Adding printk's is a pretty quick-n-easy way of finding out where it is
getting stuck. Just add

#define AAA() printk("%s:%d\n", __FILE__, __LINE__)

to kernel.h and sprinkle AAA()'s everywhere. It takes a few iterations to
drill right down to the bug.

YES. I finally have a working 2.6.2-rc1-mm3 booted kernel.
Lets review folks---
reverted -funit-at-a-time
patched test_wp_bit so exception tables are sorted sooner
reverted md-partition patch
Thank you very much for your help. I hope we all learned something today. I
definatly did.

The latter two are understood, but the `-funit-at-a-time' problem is not.

Can you plesae confirm that restoring only -funit-at-a-time again produces
a crashy kernel? And that you are using a flavour of gcc-3.3? If so, I
guess we'll need to only enable it for gcc-3.4 and later.

Yea ill try it right now. Ill get back to you in about half hour, probably
less. Would you like me to send you a complied kernel or some files that my
compiler has generated if its still crashy?
I remember reading somewhere on lkml about another problem that hung RIGHT on
boot and it was related to GCC producing an invalid instruction for that
particular processor. This smells of badly generated code. Heres a recap of
my GCC:

Yes, confirmed. My version of gcc, I just sent you adding the
-funit-at-a-time hung after uncompressing the kernel. I booted a secondary
kernel, recompiled without it and all was fine again. Confirmed non-boot for
2.6.2-rc1-mm3 but without a doubt for all kernels previous where
-funit-at-a-time is active in the makefile.

It works just fine on the SuSE 9.0 3.3-hammer gcc.

So far the reports point to some Mandrake gcc 3.3 having problems
(they used an older version of Hammer branch). It's hard to be sure
because everybody having any problem with the kernel seems to like
to report it to this thread :-) But before just disabling
it I would like to track down the problem and see if it's really a
compiler issue or something that can be fixed in the kernel.

If you really want to disable it I would prefer to only check for that
compiler version and keep it for working 3.3-hammers.

Ok thanks for the confimration. I will try to reproduce this with the
SuSE 8.2 compiler and track it down.

Ok, found it. This patch should fix it. The top level asm in process.c
assumed that the section was .text, but that is not guaranteed in a
funit-at-a-time compiler. It ended up in the setup section and messed up
the argument parsing. This bug could have hit with any compiler,
it was just plain luck that it worked with newer gcc 3.3 and 3.4.

Please test if it fixes your problem.

Andrew, please merge it if the bug is confirmed to be fixed.

I've moved the enabling of -funit-at-a-time out of Makefile and down into
arch/i386/Makefile, and I changed to require gcc-3.4 or higher.

So if you want to use -funit-at-a-time on gcc-3.3/hammer you can do so.

Confirmed here. 2.6.2-rc1-mm3 boots just fine with this patch; without patch
it hangs just as described before.
(-funit-at-a-time enabled, of course).

Many thanks to all.

Please undo that and apply this patch instead. It fixes the bug that
broke booting with older gcc 3.3-hammer compilers (confirmed by
two people on l-k). It was plain luck that it worked with the other
compilers.

I'll turn it on for gcc-3.3 and higher. We can change that if someone has
tested earlier compilers.

Also, I do think this should remain a per-arch decision. Other
architectures could well have similar problems to this and we don't want to
be mysteriously breaking their kernels for them.

Earlier compilers never supported -funit-at-a-time. The option
was first implemented in gcc 3.3-hammer and later merged into 3.4.

That's fine by me. While you're at it could you enable it for x86-64 too?

OK, then let's use check-gcc again.

yup.
