Subject: a couple of oopses with 2.6.14

Hi,

here's a machine that works perfectly with 2.6.11, but gives oopes during the
boot process with 2.6.14. Unfortunately its everytime another oops. Usually I
would assume its a memory issue, but the machine really works perfectly with
2.6.11.
We will run a memory test over the weekend, but so far I don't believe it will
find anything.

The second should be fixed by this:

author goggin, edward <[email protected]> Tue, 8 Nov 2005 20:02:23 +0000
(15:02 -0500)
commit 34ea80ec6a02ad02e6b9c75c478c18e5880d6713

[SCSI] fix usb storage oops

The problem is that scsi_run_queue is called from scsi_next_command()
after doing a scsi_put_command. If the command was the only thing
holding the reference on the scsi_device then the resulting device put
will tear down the block queue. Fix this by taking a reference to the
device and holding it around scsi_run_queue()

Hello Andrew and James,

thanks for your help.

I'm not sure if its only a sata problem, I saw several of other oopses, one
was related to Firewire/scsi (ok, could be a consequence of the previous sata
problem), one came from bluesmoke (external patch) and some of them I
couldn't associate to anything (but those I couldn't also capture via
netconsole).

Sure, I will test 2.6.15 this evening. I will also enable most debugging
information for this testkernel, ok?

Thanks,
Bernd

PS: For production we unfortunately can't use 2.6.15 - reiserfs trouble (well,
I could try to revert commit 5fa8ad644faa114c4190484ac50e15236fc7cdd9, but
I'm still waiting for an offical statement of the reiserfs poeple) and
Win4Lin patches are available up to 2.6.14 only (its the PC of our secretary
and she really wouldn't like that ;) ).

Yes, 2.6.15.3 works, no oopses. Only this information

[4294743.341000] scsi0 : ata_piix
[4294743.514000] ATA: abnormal status 0x7F on port 0xE407

I can't test if sata works, there's just nothing connected.

Btw, the printk timing information seem to be uninitalized, is this by
intentention or is it a bug?

Thanks,
Bernd

Has this machine's sata support ever worked? If so, in which kernel?
(Apologies if you've already described this).

It's expected. We use a very raw, low-level funtion for the printk
timestamping because we don't want to be taking locks from within printk.
The timestamping is mainly for working out the time duration between
printk's, rather than for absolute time.

Don't know, there was never anything connected to the sata ports. It was also
just an accident that sata was compiled statically into the kernel.
Though, with 2.6.11 we don't get the warnings:

libata version 1.10 loaded.
ata_piix version 1.03

ata2: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0xE400 ctl 0xE002 bmdma 0xDC08 irq 18
ata1: SATA port has no device.
scsi0 : ata_piix
ata2: SATA port has no device.
scsi1 : ata_piix
