Subject: [PATCH] mmc: Add new via-sdmmc host controller driver

This patch adds a driver vor VIA's SD/MMC host controller, present in
recent VIA chipsets such as the VX800 and VX855

Signed-off-by: Joseph Chan <[email protected]>

---

This is version v6 of the patch, incorporating the following changes
as opposed to v5:
* proper SD high speed support
* don't overclock the card
* make sure debug statements are correctly formatted in syslog
* Add kernel message in case we end up having to overlock a card due to
a controller bug

This define is no longer used.

This is pretty nasty. Please see if you can provide a workaround some
time soon.

What if we actually do need to power off?

You need to do the removal as the first step and you might need to
explicitly kill any ongoing requests.

Hi Pierre,

as usual, thanks for your review+comments.

thanks, removed.

yes, I'm looking into this, definitely. Will need some
experimentation/testing, but I'll submit an incremental fix ASAP.

I see. Good spot. It seems like we actually leave the power on,
and instread only switch the clock off:

according to the (public) docs, this bit is not about power but about
clock gating. I have renamed it to SDMODE_CLK_ON to make it more clear.

Thanks, I've fixed this in my tree.

Looking at other drivers, imxmmc seems to get this wrong, too.

> and you might need to explicitly kill any ongoing requests.

you mean something like the snippet in sdhci.c:
======
if (dead) {
spin_lock_irqsave(&host->lock, flags);

host->flags |= SDHCI_DEVICE_DEAD;

if (host->mrq) {
printk(KERN_ERR "%s: Controller removed during "
" transfer!\n", mmc_hostname(host->mmc));

host->mrq->cmd->error = -ENOMEDIUM;
tasklet_schedule(&host->finish_tasklet);
}

spin_unlock_irqrestore(&host->lock, flags);
}
======

Why is sdhci about the only driver that does it? What decides if we need
to kill ongoing requests or not?

Also, you stated that mmc_remove_host needs to be the first step. However,
sdhci first kills the ongoing rquest (if "dead"), and then removes the host.

Quite right. I suppose someone should have a look at that...

I guess I haven't kept an eye on it so the others are simply buggy.

Right, because the reason you need to end the request is that failure
to do so will wedge the MMC system and mmc_remove_host() will never
return.

Normally the requests will eventually be completed by interrupts coming
from the hardware, but if it got removed then that might not happen.

Ok, I will copy+paste the snippet from sdhci.c and do some testing, both
removing the card while continuously issuing requests, as well as removing the
driver while doing that.

Will submit the result again in two days or so.
