Subject: [PATCH] EDAC: i82443bxgx: Fix invalid memory type assignment

The i82443bxgx_edac driver assigns an invalid negative value when an
unknown DRAM type is detected. Drop the unnecessary '-' that brings
misbehavior.

Is this something you caught by inspection or you really have hw that
loads that driver...

Wikipedia says 440BX chipset is pentium II and III which, if so, would
drop its priority considerably. CC:stable would be not needed either, TBH.

Thx.

I just followed the old percept: read the source, Luke.

OK, feel free to drop that.

Takashi

You're a wise jedi :)

Nah, I can take it - I'll just drop the CC:stable thing.

Thx.

Actually, looking at this driver more - it has been depending on BROKEN
since 2007!

28f96eeafc89 ("drivers/edac-new-i82443bxgz-mc-driver: mark as broken")

and no one has made the move to fix it. Well, here's a "fix" - let's see if
anyone moves now...

It has been marked BROKEN since 2007:

28f96eeafc89 ("drivers/edac-new-i82443bxgz-mc-driver: mark as broken")

and no one has made a move to fix it so let's kill it.

Hi,

I'd forgotten that it was in BROKEN state.

The issue was that the driver was fully functioning, but it clashed with
the graphics aperture driver - both use different registers within the
same PCI device - it was marked broken on the basis that the with the
kernel PCI device allocation code as it stood at the time, if the
i82443bxgx_edac driver was loaded first, the graphics aperture
configuration driver could not also be loaded, and this could break
existing setups.

As far as I remember, it was left was that Greg KH had said that he was
working on a change to the PCI device allocation code which would allow
both to coexist. I don't know if that happened.

The last CPU which used these chipsets (130nm Pentium III) were released
in 2001. I don't know when they were produced up until.

On that basis, I don't see a problem with removing it, but if there's a
preference for me to fix it, (and if I still have some old hardware
somewhere that I can test it on), I'll be happy to do that instead.

Tim.

Well, if you don't have the hardware anymore, fixing it would be moot
and the only thing we can do is remove it. So, the question is, do you
still have a functioning box and you want to waste your time with it?

I mean, this is pentium III, it probably takes forever to build the
latest kernel on it and if it were me, I'd simply buy new hardware.
Because IMO, it is not worth the energy to even power such ancient crap
and waste money on the electricity it is going to consume...
