Subject: [PATCH net-next v6 00/18] splice, net: Replace sendpage with sendmsg(MSG_SPLICE_PAGES), part 1

Here's the first tranche of patches towards providing a MSG_SPLICE_PAGES
internal sendmsg flag that is intended to replace the ->sendpage() op with
calls to sendmsg(). MSG_SPLICE_PAGES is a hint that tells the protocol
that it should splice the pages supplied if it can and copy them if not.

This will allow splice to pass multiple pages in a single call and allow
certain parts of higher protocols (e.g. sunrpc, iwarp) to pass an entire
message in one go rather than having to send them piecemeal. This should
also make it easier to handle the splicing of multipage folios.

A helper, skb_splice_from_iter() is provided to do the work of splicing or
copying data from an iterator. If a page is determined to be unspliceable,
then the helper will copy it into its own fragment. This puts the copying
in a single place rather than in all the layers above TCP/UDP (such as
sunrpc or siw), allowing them to include data in slab pages in a single
sendmsg() wrapped around the data pages.

Note that this facility is not made available to userspace and does not
provide any sort of callback.

This set consists of the following parts:

(1) Define the MSG_SPLICE_PAGES flag and prevent sys_sendmsg() from being
able to set it.

(2) Overhaul the page_frag_alloc_align() allocator:

(a) Split it out from mm/page_alloc.c into its own file,
mm/page_frag_alloc.c.

(b) Make it use multipage folios rather than compound pages.

(c) Give it per-cpu buckets to allocate from so no locking is
required.

(d) The netdev_alloc_cache and the napi fragment cache are then cast
in terms of this and some private allocators are removed.

I'm not sure that the existing allocator is 100% thread safe.

(3) Add an extra argument to skb_append_pagefrags() so that something
other than MAX_SKB_FRAGS can be used (sysctl_max_skb_frags for
example).

(4) Add the skb_splice_from_iter() helper to handle splicing pages into
skbuffs for MSG_SPLICE_PAGES that can be shared by TCP, IP/UDP and
AF_UNIX.

(5) Implement MSG_SPLICE_PAGES support in TCP.

(6) Make do_tcp_sendpages() just wrap sendmsg() and then fold it in to its
various callers.

(7) Implement MSG_SPLICE_PAGES support in IP and make udp_sendpage() just
a wrapper around sendmsg().

(8) Implement MSG_SPLICE_PAGES support in IP6/UDP6.

(9) Implement MSG_SPLICE_PAGES support in AF_UNIX.

(10) Make AF_UNIX copy unspliceable pages.

Change the page_frag_cache allocator to use multipage folios rather than
groups of pages. This reduces page_frag_free to just a folio_put() or
put_page().

Subject: [PATCH net-next v6 07/18] tcp: Support MSG_SPLICE_PAGES

Make TCP's sendmsg() support MSG_SPLICE_PAGES. This causes pages to be
spliced or copied (if it cannot be spliced) from the source iterator.

This allows ->sendpage() to be replaced by something that can handle
multiple multipage folios in a single transaction.

Subject: [PATCH net-next v6 04/18] mm: Make the page_frag_cache allocator use per-cpu

Make the page_frag_cache allocator have a separate allocation bucket for
each cpu to avoid racing. This means that no lock is required, other than
preempt disablement, to allocate from it, though if a softirq wants to
access it, then softirq disablement will need to be added.

Make the NVMe, mediatek and GVE drivers pass in NULL to page_frag_cache()
and use the default allocation buckets rather than defining their own.

Subject: [PATCH net-next v6 08/18] tcp: Convert do_tcp_sendpages() to use MSG_SPLICE_PAGES

Convert do_tcp_sendpages() to use sendmsg() with MSG_SPLICE_PAGES rather
than directly splicing in the pages itself. do_tcp_sendpages() can then be
inlined in subsequent patches into its callers.

This allows ->sendpage() to be replaced by something that can handle
multiple multipage folios in a single transaction.

Subject: [PATCH net-next v6 06/18] net: Add a function to splice pages into an skbuff for MSG_SPLICE_PAGES

Add a function to handle MSG_SPLICE_PAGES being passed internally to
sendmsg(). Pages are spliced into the given socket buffer if possible and
copied in if not (ie. they're slab pages or have a zero refcount).

so inline it, allowing do_tcp_sendpages() to be removed. This is part of

Convert udp_sendpage() to use sendmsg() with MSG_SPLICE_PAGES rather than

Subject: [PATCH net-next v6 18/18] af_unix: Support MSG_SPLICE_PAGES

Make AF_UNIX sendmsg() support MSG_SPLICE_PAGES, splicing in pages from the
source iterator if possible and copying the data in otherwise.

This allows ->sendpage() to be replaced by something that can handle

Sorry about that. I think the problem is that the copy of the message from
you directly to me arrives after the first copy that comes via a mailing list
and google then deletes the direct one - as obviously no one could possibly
want duplicates, right? :-/ - and so you usually get consigned to the
linux-kernel or linux-fsdevel mailing list folder.

There are only four users of struct page_frag_cache, the one these patches
modify::

(1) GVE.
(2) Mediatek.
(3) NVMe.
(4) skbuff.

Note that things are slightly confused by there being three very similarly
named frag allocators (page_frag and page_frag_1k in addition to
page_frag_cache) and the __page_frag_cache_drain() function gets used for
things other than just page_frag_cache.

I've replaced the single allocation buckets with per-cpu allocation buckets
for (1), (2) and (3) so that no locking[*] is required other than pinning it
to the cpu temporarily - but I can't test them as I don't have hardware.

[*] Note that what's upstream doesn't have locking, and I'm not sure all the
users of it are SMP-safe.

That leaves (4).

Upstream, skbuff.c creates two separate per-cpu frag caches and I've elected
to retain that, except that the per-cpu bits are now inside the frag allocator
as I'm not entirely sure of the reason that there's a separate napi frag cache
to the netdev_alloc_cache.

The general page_frag_cache allocator is used by skb_splice_from_iter() if it
encounters a page it can't take a ref on, so it has been tested through that
using sunrpc, sunrpc+siw and cifs+siw.

As far as I can tell, it doesn't make any obvious difference to directly
pumping data through TCP or TLS over TCP or transferring data over a network
filesystem such as sunrpc or cifs using siw/TCP. I've tested this between two
machines over a 1G and a 10G link.

I can generate some actual numbers tomorrow.


Actually, I probably can drop these patches 2-4 from this patchset and just
use the netdev_alloc_cache in skb_splice_from_iter() for now. Since that
copies unspliceable data, I no longer need to allocate frags in the next layer
up.

it might return true on a page that is not safe in that respect.

What rules do you propose for sendpage users? "Pass whatever page reference
you want, it'll do the right thing"? Anything short of that would better
be documented as explicitly as possible...

Hmmm... Fair point. Is everything passed through splice guaranteed to be
safe, I wonder? Probably not because vmsplice(). Does that mean the existing
callers of sendpage_ok() are also making unviable assumptions?
