Hi,
With kernel 2.4.12 and 2.4.13 the parallel port on
my machine looks like this according to dmesg:
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
parport0: cpp_daisy: aa5500ff(98)
parport0: assign_addrs: aa5500ff(98)
parport0: faking semi-colon
parport0: Printer, Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 1100
Under 2.4.10 is looks like this:
Winbond Super-IO detection, now testing ports 3F0,370,250,4E,2E ...
SMSC Super-IO detection, now testing Ports 2F0, 370 ...
0x378: FIFO is 16 bytes
0x378: writeIntrThreshold is 16
0x378: readIntrThreshold is 16
0x378: PWord is 8 bits
0x378: Interrupts are ISA-Pulses
0x378: ECP port cfgA=0x10 cfgB=0x40
0x378: ECP settings irq=<none or set by other means> dma=<none or set by other means>
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778) [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,ECP]
parport0: irq 7 detected
parport0: cpp_daisy: aa5500ff(98)
parport0: assign_addrs: aa5500ff(98)
parport0: faking semi-colon
parport0: Printer, Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 1100
2.4.10 outputs much more information - especially the fact
that the port is in ECP mode.
When I run up VMware workstation 3 beta under 2.4.12 or 2.4.13
it barfs with:
"Unsupported parallel port hardware (no PS/2 or ECP mode)
for /dev/parport0. Device parallel0 will start disconnected"
This is a shame, because my print server is a virtual
machine running under VMware...
In the BIOS the parallel port is set to "ECP/378/IRQ7/DMA 3"
Below is my .config file for 2.4.13
FWIW system is a PIII 450MHZ on a 440BX motherboard running RH7.1
lspci shows this:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX - 82443BX/ZX Host bridge (rev 03)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX - 82443BX/ZX AGP bridge (rev 03)
00:07.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82371AB PIIX4 ISA (rev 02)
00:07.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82371AB PIIX4 IDE (rev 01)
00:07.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82371AB PIIX4 USB (rev 01)
00:07.3 Bridge: Intel Corporation 82371AB PIIX4 ACPI (rev 02)
00:0b.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905B 100BaseTX [Cyclone] (rev 30)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: 3Dfx Interactive, Inc. Voodoo 3 (rev 01)
Have I missed something ?

Yes. It's showing you what modes it is prepared to use.

A bug; it was showing you what modes the hardware was capable of,
_despite_ knowing that it wasn't going to use it.
The parport driver will only use ECP and parallel port FIFO modes if
it has an IRQ to use. Try 'irq=auto'.

Hi
is it a bug too with 2.2.20pre11, from dmesg :
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778), irq 7 [SPP,ECP,ECPEPP,ECPPS2]

Tim,
Thanks for the tip, but it's not helping. I've tried
"irq=auto" and "irq=7" but it still wont play.
I just noticed that CONFIG_PARPORT_PC_FIFO is set to NO
and I'm rebuilding with it set to YES to see if that
helps...
This option was also off when I was using 2.4.10 so
I'm not sure if it will help.

Yes, you need that enabled or it won't even have the code for using
the FIFO compiled in.

But 2.4.10 still had the bug that advertised modes that it wouldn't
use.

Enabling CONFIG_PARPORT_PC_FIFO has not helped, I now
get the following:
# modprobe parport_pc verbose_probing=1 irq=auto

But with 2.4.10 it _was_ using ECP mode and I was
having no trouble...

This turned out to be because parport_pc ignores a supplied irq when
no io parameter is also supplied. 'io=0x378 irq=7' works fine.

Thank you... that sure doesn't jump out at someone, it generates no
error message, etc.
Question: is this intended behaviour? I would think that you would
normally want to just say irq=auto and let the driver find the io
address just as it does normally.

It is intended behaviour. 'irq=auto' in this case didn't help because
the ECP chipset would not tell us what IRQ it was assigned (it just
said "it's set by jumpers, or alternatively I'm not telling you".
The problem with just specifying 'irq=7' on its own is that in the
case of there being more than one port it isn't clear what it should
mean.
When there is only one port to consider, it would make sense to use
that IRQ, but by the time we know how many ports there are we've
already decided not to use the supplied parameter. Patches
welcome. :-)

This part I do not quite understand. I have an old laptop that
was working with parport=auto up to 2.4.10 and then stopped
working, just like the original poster's problem description.
>From the original poster's description, 2.4.10 claimed to have
detected both address and irq for parport0, while 2.4.12,
according to the your response, could not tell that IRQ=7. Do
you mean that the logic which made 2.4.10 to claime to have
detected IRQ=7 was faulty and the logic in 2.4.12 is being
careful not to misdetect?

Subject: linux-2.4.12 / linux-2.4.13 parallel port problem
With kernel 2.4.12 and 2.4.13 the parallel port on
my machine looks like this according to dmesg:
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
parport0: cpp_daisy: aa5500ff(98)
parport0: assign_addrs: aa5500ff(98)
parport0: faking semi-colon

Under 2.4.10 is looks like this:
...
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778) [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,ECP]
parport0: irq 7 detected

Firstly, I was unable to apply this patch on 2.4.13...
I'm now running 2.4.14-pre2, still had difficulty applying
the patch, and ended up patching parport_pc.c by hand. (?)
However, loading the parport_pc module, with NO arguments,
like I was doing up till 2.4.10, and it still does not
recognise the port as being in ECP mode:
[root@p450 /root]# modprobe parport_pc
[root@p450 /root]# dmesg -c
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778) [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
parport0: irq 7 detected
parport0: cpp_daisy: aa5500ff(98)
parport0: assign_addrs: aa5500ff(98)
parport0: faking semi-colon
parport0: Printer, Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 1100
If I load the module WITH arguments, something I've never
had to do in the past, it works:
[root@p450 /root]# modprobe parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7
[root@p450 /root]# dmesg -c
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778), irq 7, using FIFO [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,ECP]
parport0: cpp_daisy: aa5500ff(98)
parport0: assign_addrs: aa5500ff(98)
parport0: faking semi-colon
parport0: Printer, Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 1100
I'm still unsure why I NEED to supply arguments
to this module.
Regards.

I made the patch against 2.4.14-pre2. Works for me:
[tim@cyberelk linux]$ patch -p1 < /tmp/linux-irq.patch
patching file drivers/parport/ChangeLog
patching file drivers/parport/parport_pc.c
[tim@cyberelk linux]$ grep SUBLEVEL Makefile | head -1
SUBLEVEL = 14
> However, loading the parport_pc module, with NO arguments,

As I think I've explained: without an IRQ to use, the current
implementation can't use the FIFO, and so won't use hardware
assistance for ECP mode.
By default, parport_pc doesn't use _any_ interrupts, due to the likely
conflicts it would cause (ISA soundcards, etc.).
> [root@p450 /root]# modprobe parport_pc

So IRQ 7 is detected after you've applied the patch, whereas before it
wasn't at all. The patch works. 'ECP' is not listed in brackets
because hardware assistance won't be used.

Just use 'irq=auto'. Now that the IRQ probing is fixed again, this
will work.
> I'm still unsure why I NEED to supply arguments to this module.
The short answer is that you shouldn't have to. If I remember
correctly, you just want VMware to work. VMware doesn't go through
the kernel to access the port, it just writes the registers directly.
But it asks the kernel what modes it is prepared to use. This is
something that needs to be fixed in VMware really: if it isn't going
to use the kernel for port access, it shouldn't care what modes the
kernel would use if it did.
If VMware is going to write to the ports directly, it should do its
own probing of the port hardware.
This policy isn't one of just being obstinate: the old behaviour was a
bug, and differed from what parport.txt had to say about the matter.
Not only that, but in order for ECP-mode printing to work properly the
fixed behaviour is a necessity. (Otherwise we'd use ECP mode on
ECP-able printers even when it was slower to do so!)
Thanks for testing the patch. Hopefully when the PnPBIOS support is
fully tested we'll be able to use whatever interrupts we find, rather
than playing as safe as we do currently.

Thanks. It (actually 2.4.13-ac2) does seem to fix the problem
for my laptop.
