Hey,
Found this in dmesg today...
Default RH7.2 kernel
I have no idea how/what triggered it, so I doubt trying with a later
kernel to see if it happens again will help (it came after almost 10 days
of uptime). Just posting this on the off chance it may be an undiscovered
bug.
ksymoops 2.4.1 on i686 2.4.7-10. Options used
-V (default)
-k /proc/ksyms (default)
-l /proc/modules (default)
-o /lib/modules/2.4.7-10/ (default)
-m /boot/System.map-2.4.7-10 (default)
Warning: You did not tell me where to find symbol information. I will
assume that the log matches the kernel and modules that are running
right now and I'll use the default options above for symbol resolution.
If the current kernel and/or modules do not match the log, you can get
more accurate output by telling me the kernel version and where to find
map, modules, ksyms etc. ksymoops -h explains the options.

Please stop badmouthing people that don't happen to pay you. (and don't
mis-spell their name).
The Red Hat Linux 7.2 kernels don't have reiserfs patches so all bugs
are
yours and yours alone.....

I wouldnt upgrade to a Linus kernel. That lacks several drivers, ext3, 32bit
uid capable quota and some other stuff. 2.4.15pre3 has some of that now.
You should however grab the Red Hat errata (2.4.9 series) kernel either
via up2date or from a Red Hat ftp archive. That fixes several things.

If I understand correctly that it is 2.4.7 that went in, and there were
no memory manager or vfs patches, then you are almost surely correct,
and it probably has some relatively rare bugs fixed recently but is
reasonably stable on the whole. He should still upgrade to a recent
Linus kernel though. Yura, have you tested this kernel yet? Do you
recognize this bug as a fixed bug?
Hans
We have now tested the latest Red Hat 7.2 kernel (2.4.7.-10) and it
passes our regression tests, which means that it is indeed a reasonably
stable kernel that I would be willing to put my home directory on if it
was me and I wasn't using NFS on it. (I used 2.4.5 on my laptop for
months with no problem, and I would guess that it is as stable as that
one, when we talk about stable, remember we mean stable for a a few
hundred thousand users). The latest Linus kernels will be more stable,
and since Linux is still stabilizing, I would guess that using a recent
kernel is going to remain a good idea for the next few months.
Apologies to Red Hat for relying on second hand reports, and for that
reason advising users to go to a kernel I had more knowledge about.
Users using NFS should keep a watch on the recently found bug involving
rename, I think a patch just came out recently, and I expect it will be
going into the kernel soon.
Hans
Correction, the NFS rename bug I mentioned is not reiserfs specific, and
it is fixed by Neil Brown in a patch that is reported to work by our
users, and it is better described as a hardlink to unexported files bug
rather than a rename bug. So if you apply that patch, or export entire
filesystems only, it is reasonable to use reiserfs for home directories.
Hans
