No, this patch is not acceptable.

This has been beaten to death in previous threads.
The problem is a mismatch in your kernel config between
generic hdlc (M) and synclink (Y).

synclink drivers can *optionally* support generic hdlc.
You *must* be able to build synclink driver without generic hdlc.
Because of this you *can't* just put in the generic hdlc dependency.

Several alternative patches were posted (3 or 4 months) ago.
No particular patch won the approval of all kernel developers,
so nothing was done.

The existing build breakage is unacceptable too. It's this bogosity

#ifdef CONFIG_HDLC_MODULE
#define CONFIG_HDLC 1
#endif

which directly causes the build breakage.

Unless someone fixes it The Right Way, my patch seems like the best we
can do. People who complain "you must be able to build without hdlc"
should step up and make it so. Currently, it is not so.

I builds just fine with and without HDLC.

The only problem is defining synclink as built in
while defining hdlc as a module.

This patch *breaks* the driver.

My previous attempts (and those of others who suggested
different fixes) at preventing this kernel
misconfiguration were all rejected. I tried
repeatedly over many weeks.

I think purposefully breaking a driver while rejecting
fixes to the real problem is a bad idea.

I remember something actually did "won the approval". Don't remember
the details but I think it included conditional compilation, not
changing CONFIG_* macros (using different name(s) instead, just not
starting with "CONFIG_"), and IIRC no changes to Kconfigs.

At least I don't remember any objections to that last version so
I assumed it's closed.

Perhaps it was just a dream, who knows :-)

Nevertheless a fix outlined above would be acceptable, wouldn't it?

It's been a while so I don't remember the details
of each suggested fix. The fixes that came closest to
being accepted changed the Kconfigs.

We were in a perpetual state of:

1. supply patch
2. get criticism from new person just joining thread
3. change patch to address criticism
4. goto #1

After a few weeks of that, I gave up.

Since the only problem is compile errors with
a broken kernel configuration, I was willing to
go with the flow and leave it in the current
functional state as it has been for years.

> Nevertheless a fix outlined above would be acceptable, wouldn't it?

It breaks things by forcing the customer to include code
that is not required. That is an issue for embedded systems.

But since we seem stuck in a state where real fixes
are not allowed, and this breakage is constantly reintroduced,
the best thing may be to allow the breakage and I can
provide patches to customers to get things working again.

My preference would be to either fix the warnings (which
I've tried) or leave things in a working state (which
I've also tried), but neither option seems to be allowed.

Right, the description fits. OTOH I recall the criticism had a fair
amount of merit. That's how the things work here. Been there many
times BTW.

Nope, the fix which didn't change Kconfig and just assumed HDLC=m and
SYNCLINK*=y => HDLC is not available. I.e., the one with

#if defined(CONFIG_HDLC_MODULE) &&/|| defined(CONFIG_SYNCLINK*something)
#define CONFIG_HDLC something

changed into

#if defined(CONFIG_HDLC_MODULE) &&/|| defined(CONFIG_SYNCLINK*something)
#define USE_HDLC something
^^^^^^^^

It may look like that sometimes but it's not real. Anyway I think
everyone would benefit from the correct fix and the issue wouldn't
come again. Having looked at it I'd fix it myself but I'm pretty
sure you still have the old patch (which changes CONFIG_ macros
outside Kconfig, I mean in .c files) and it could be trivially
modified then applied (and perhaps tested with real hardware if
needed).

To be more precise, that is many distinct
criticisms from distinct people, some of which
contradict each other.

I know code is open to criticism,
but after several weeks of submitting patches
and getting no closer to acceptance I gave up.
We were going around in circles where one person
wanted some thing that conflicted with what
another person wanted.

There isn't much point in resubmitting the previously
rejected patches only to be rejected again.

I was planning on trying again in a month or two
to see if all the people who rejected all of the
previous patches have come to some sort of agreement.

Without such agreement we are left in the state
of never ending patches.

That's not exactly how I remember it.

See Andrew's mail http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/6/7/257. For me, your
response(s) meant the problem was solved (so it wans't a dream :-) ).

For reference, the original patch which was almost accepted was
http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/6/7/111.

Kconfig patches were clearly a dead end, Randy hadn't realized HDLC
is optional for the synclink drivers.

That happens sometimes.

I'd suggest that you send what you believe to be the correct change and see
if you can preempt the usual objections via the changelog.

I wouldn't say it's a high-priority thing, btw. There are surely plenty of
won't-link config settings and few people are hurting from this one.

Wrong

I submitted that patch and more people started
saying that patch was unacceptable (for new reasons).
(It was submitted as a different thread)

It's at that point I gave up.

OK, I'll review this and start resubmitting
when my current backlog of work clears.

I'm not really sure how to preempt objections
with the changelog. The objections seemed to be
against the fundemental mechanism of the patch.

In your changelog, explain why you're doing things differently from how
some people will suggest. That way, when new people read the new thread
started by your new patch, they see the results of the previous cycle and
don't rehash old arguments. This also means that people in the future
wondering why the code is weird there can find out without extensive
mailing list searching.

I must have missed the new thread then. Do you have a copy of that
mail (or some other pointer)? I can't find it in the archives without
some hint and I'm really interested in what people found to be
unacceptable.

Thanks.

Looking back over the archives, the 'other' thread I was thinking
about was the preceding thread to the one you quoted:
http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0606.0/1608.html

The thread you point to was the final thread, but you
were missing the follow ups where other changes were
requested even after Andrew's post:
http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0606.1/0489.html

I think at that point (it has been a while), having just heard
'do this and your OK' from Andrew, but other people still wanting
something else I got frustrated, said 'no more' and stopped.

In hind sight, I should have ignored the posts that followed
and posted what Andrew suggested. When I look at this again,
I will take that approach.
