Subject: linux-next: Tree for May 15

Hi all,

Changes since 20230512:

New trees: fastrpc, wpan-staging

The mm-hotfixes tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree.

The drm-misc tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree.

The amdgpu tree gained a conflict against the drm-misc tree.

The sound-asoc tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree and a build
failure, so I used the version from next-20230512.

The usb tree gained conflicts against the usb.current tree.

Non-merge commits (relative to Linus' tree): 1956
2351 files changed, 58055 insertions(+), 21456 deletions(-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" and checkout or reset to the new
master.

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There is also the merge.log file in the Next
directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with a ppc64_defconfig
for powerpc, an allmodconfig for x86_64, a multi_v7_defconfig for arm
and a native build of tools/perf. After the final fixups (if any), I do
an x86_64 modules_install followed by builds for x86_64 allnoconfig,
powerpc allnoconfig (32 and 64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig, allyesconfig
and pseries_le_defconfig and i386, arm64, s390, sparc and sparc64
defconfig and htmldocs. And finally, a simple boot test of the powerpc
pseries_le_defconfig kernel in qemu (with and without kvm enabled).

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

I am currently merging 363 trees (counting Linus' and 103 trees of bug
fix patches pending for the current merge release).

Stats about the size of the tree over time can be seen at
http://neuling.org/linux-next-size.html .

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Randy Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds. And to Paul
Gortmaker for triage and bug fixes.

Cheers,
Stephen Rothwell

This one slipped through, I'm adding !BUILTIN_DTB to our internal CI,
I'll send a fix today.

I'll check this one too which seems to be related to kernel/pi introduction.

Thanks for report, this should be fixed by adding __maybe_unused. I will
send a patch shortly

Martin: please send a followup. Most likely it needs to be moved under a
config option.

That commit should be reverted. I didn't realize it wouldn't link, while
it compiles fine.

Thanks to Bjorn: this is caused by XIP_KERNEL, which is known to have
limited size, hence the overlap, so no fix for this one. Is there a way
to exclude this config from randconfig?

What exactly is the problem? That the randconfig is too big for the max
XIP kernel size?
We already disable half the world for XIP, is turning off the pi stuff
an option? It's already turned off for 32-bit, right?

It's not related to the pi stuff, the problem has been present since
5.13 (since the introduction of the XIP kernels :)).

> It's already turned off for 32-bit, right?

Yes, it's only compiled with 64-bit kernels.

Does this mean exclude XIP_KERNEL or something else from randconfigs?

thanks.

I meant excluding XIP_KERNEL from randconfigs: it has very strict
constraints regarding what can/can't be enabled then it needs human
intervention to make sure the error above does not happen. So I would
not bother testing this in randconfigs if possible.

I can exclude it from my randconfig builds, but I don't know of a way to exclude it from randconfig builds in general (i.e., for everyone).

Arnd had suggested a trick related to menus that would result in
randconfig never enabling some config. It'd suggested for
CONFIG_NONPORTABLE, but we didn't use it because it'd reduce randconfig
coverage.

Maybe we should add a CONFIG_VERYSPECIAL of some sort and hide things
like XIP behind it (maybe M-mode too)?

I usually add 'depends on !COMPILE_TEST', that excludes it from most
build bots.

XIP_KERNEL already has "depends on !COMPILE_TEST", since April of 2021.

Half of me wants to say just remove XIP_KERNEL entirely. Or make it
depend on BROKEN, since noone seems to actually test it and I don't
think we even know if it works right now?

Ya, let's do it. If it's broken and nobody has said anything but
randconfig, then probably nobody's using it. Let's mark it as broken or
deprecated or whatever and then see if anyone complains.

Apart from being able to generate kernels that are broken (IOW this
randconfig), when we changed the dtb back to being in the fix, we
removed some special case XIP_KERNEL stuff (that's commit f1581626071c
("riscv: Do not set initial_boot_params to the linear address of the
dtb")) where Alex didn't know for sure whether it was safe to do.

Vexriscv (which is Myrtle I think) & Vitaly Wool both have an interest
in it. I dunno Myrtle's email, but I've CCed Vitaly. Maybe someone can
at least test the thing :)

Cheers,
Conor.
