Subject: [PATCH 3/3] net: phy: mediatek: add support for built-in 2.5G ethernet PHY on MT7988

From: "SkyLake.Huang" <[email protected]>

Add support for internal 2.5Gphy on MT7988. This driver will load
necessary firmware, add appropriate time delay and figure out LED.
Also, certain control registers will be set to fix link-up issues.

Subject: [PATCH 2/3] net: phy: mediatek: Add mtk phy lib for token ring access & LED/other manipulations

From: "SkyLake.Huang" <[email protected]>

Integrate some common phy manipulations in mtk-phy-lib:
1. Token ring access: This is proprietary register access on page 52b5.
Use these APIs so we can see which fields we're going to modify/set/clear.
2. LED: External/internal giga & internal 2.5g phy share almost the same
LED control registers/logic.
3. Extend 1G TX/RX link pulse time: We observe that some devices' 1G
training time violates specification, which may last 2230ms and affect
later TX/RX link pulse time. So we try to extend our 1G TX/RX link pulse
time so that we can still detect such devices.

I assume this should go to net-next. You should mention the target tree
like [PATCH net-next 0/3] and so on, in this case it's pretty obvious
though.

Generally the series looks fine and I'm glad you factored-out common
parts like the LED handling which is a great improvement also for the
older PHYs found in MT7530 and MT7531 as well as MT7621 and MT7623N.

Splitting the the 3rd patch into more atomic changes would make
reviewing a bit easier.

Also note that I've recently submitted some fixes for the LED support
which now have already been accepted to the net tree, see

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net.git/commit/?id=5b5f724b05c550e10693a53a81cadca901aefd16

So it might be the best to wait for the next round of rebase of net-next
before dealing with your suggested changes to spare maintainers from
having to deal with the merge conflicts otherwise.

Generally it'd also be nice to add support for the NO_LINK rule to the
netdev trigger, as it is supported by the hardware, but that can also be
done later obviously.

Cheers

Wouldn't it be better to do this in the probe function rather than here?

This will block for userspace while holding phydev->lock and the RTNL.
That blocks much of the networking APIs, which is not a good idea. If
you have a number of these PHYs, then the RTNL will serialise the
loading of firmware.

This is probably the BMCR, so if it is, please use the established
definitions.

This also looks like it's probably the BMCR.

And also probably the BMCR.

The English in that comment is wrong.

Ah, it appears to be a copy/paste, e.g. from mxl-gpy.c. In fact, a lot
of this function is identical to gpy_config_aneg(). Maybe it should be
pulled out into a helper.

This comment seems to contradict the comment above?

Also, this code does not mask anything, it sets bits. What does
genphy_read_abilities() find out about the device? If the hardware
confirms to the standard, it should not indicate is supports 1/2
duplex, genphy_read_abilities() should then not return those link
modes, but it should return 10, 100 and 1000 full duplex.

What does genphy_c45_pma_read_abilities() report about the device?

Do does it support half duplex or not?

This is not what i would expect for moving code into a library. I
expect code to be deleted from one file and appear in another file,
with some minor changes, static dropped, EXPORT_SYMBOL_PHY added. If
i see code just move, i don't need to review it line for line. If you
do want to change the code, please move it into the library first, and
make modifications.

Lots of small patches, which are obviously correct.

Shouldn't this be
GENMASK(6, 0) | BIT(7)

to include the MTK_PHY_LED_ON_LINK2500 bit as well?

I also noticed that this bit is the only difference between the LED
controller of the internal 2.5G PHY in MT7988 and the Airoha EN8811H
(driver air_en8811h.c, present in net-next). The EN8811H seems to use
BIT(8) for LED_ON_LINK2500.

Could you create this helper library in a way that it would be useful
also for the otherwise identical LED controller of the Airoha EN8811H,
ie. supporting both variants with LED_ON_LINK2500 at BIT(7) as well as
BIT(8) would be worth it imho as all the rest could be shared.

Agree. I'll move this to probe function in v2.

I'm not sure I really get this. MT7988's internal 2.5Gphy is built
inside SoC. We won't have a number of these PHYs.

Thanks. I'll change these to corresponding BMCR definitions in v2.

Please trim the email when replying to just what is relevant. If i
need to page down lots of time to find a comment it is possible i will
skip write passed a comment...

How long does firmware download take? If you are holding RTNL you are
blocking all other network configuration. How many Ethernets does this
device have? If it is just one, it is not too bad, but if there is a
built in switch, you cannot be configuring that switch at the same
time firmware download is happening...

+1. There are _too_ _many_ people on netdev who just don't bother to do
this, and it's getting to the point where if people can't be bothered
to make it easier for me to engage with them, I'm just not going to be
bothered engaging with them. People need to realise that this is a two-
way thing, and stop making reviewers have extra work trying to find
their one or two line comment buried in a few hundred lines of irrevant
content. I might just send a reply, top posting, stating I can't be
bothered to read their email.

Sorry about that, note taken. I'll take better care of that in future.

The MT7988 SoC has a bunch of network interfaces:

- GMAC0 is typically connected as conduit to a 4-port MT7530-like DSA
switch offering 4 1GE user ports. PHY driver mediatek-ge-soc.c takes
care of those, and yes, they do need some "care"...

- GMAC1 can be used with the internal 2.5GE PHY (ie. with the driver
discussed here) OR for to connect an external PHY or SFP via
1000Base-X, 2500Base-X, SGMII, 5GBase-R, 10GBase-R or USXGMII.

- GMAC2 is can only be used with an external PHY or SFP using
1000Base-X, 2500Base-X, SGMII, 5GBase-R, 10GBase-R or USXGMII.

So while there is only exactly one of the internal 2.5GE PHY there are
many other network interfaces on that same SoC.

I hope that clarifies things a bit.
