Subject: Memory management problems in 2.4.16

I installed a 2.4.16 kernel on a 486DX2-50 machine with 8MB memory and
24MB swap and got insurmountable problems.
For instance,
$ diff file1 file2
where both files are, say, 6MB, hangs the machine.
One would expect the machine to go swapping and to hear the disk rattle,
but after a few seconds - silence; and no response when typing in a
second virtual console. The only sign of life I get is answer from a
ping from another machine.

The same machine with a 2.2.20 kernel operates as expected.
An strace shows that the last thing that happens, is an mmap of the
first file.

Various other commands that need lots of memory exhibit the same
behaviour.

It seems to me that something definitely is wrong with the kernel's
memory management.

BTW, the kernel is stripped bare bones - no PCI, only IDE, floppy,
serial and networking support. Attached the .config file.

Greetings,

Daniel Tuijnman

I'm not sure, but this may be the same problem as I repeatedly have
reported. The last time was earlier today in the "Re: [BUG] Error reading
multiple large files" message

On Wed, 9 Jan 2002, Daniel Tuijnman wrote:

Computers are like air conditioners.
They stop working when you open Windows.

Well ... maybe *in theory* 2.4.16 should work on a machine with that
little RAM but I'd say in practice Linux has simply outgrown your
machine. Have you tried any other 2.4 kernels, say, before 2.4.10 when
the VM changed? Have you considered going to a garage sale and spending
the local equivalent of $25 or $30 US for a more powerful computer?

If they named a street after Picabo Street, would it be called Picabo
Street, Street Street or Picabo Street Street?

No I haven't. Was the older VM better, then? Sorry to put it so blunt,
but if it can't swap out unneeded data, it is broken.
I've seen here people report having 1GB of memory and still running out
of it...

> Have you considered going to a garage sale and spending
> the local equivalent of $25 or $30 US for a more powerful computer?

1. I'm setting up this machine to act as a firewall for my cable
connection, so why do I need a more powerful computer?

2. My first Linux experience was on a P60 with 8MB of memory, 16MB swap.
I ran X and used TeX on my 300p. Ph.D. thesis, and that ran fine.
So why should I need more to get less?

I happen to have this machine, it works and is suited for the job.
Now please let's not get a bloatware, consumerism-throw away attitude.

Before this starts a flameware, let me make one thing clear: my main
point is, there is something wrong when an application, for which there
is plenty of (virtual) memory, grinds the whole machine to a standstill.

Greetings,
Daniel Tuijnman

Rubbish, a VM is supposed to improve, not make it impossible to
run programs after an upgrade. Keeping Linux working on low memory
machines is definately a big issue for the VM I'm developing and
I suspect it's near the top of Andrea's list too...

Absolutely agreed, the thing should just work.

If you have the time, you could try my latest -rmap patch,
available at:

http://surriel.com/patches/2.4/2.4.17-rmap-11a

I've done some testing with 'mem=9m' (using a rather fat
kernel w/ profiling) and it seems to work decently.

8MB should be enough. I was running 2.4.0-test7 on 8MB machine with no
swap, because it had no disk to swap to.

Thanks for pointing me to the right direction, Rik!

And thanks to Roy who pointed me to using vmstat to look at memory usage!

On a freshly booted machine, I ran

# echo "0 0" > /proc/sys/vm/pagetable_cache
# vmstat -n 5 | tee log &
# diff /var/lib/dpkg/avail*

(a 6Mb file of available Debian packages and a backup version of it).

With a 2.4.16 kernel, this gave as result:

procs memory swap io system cpu
r b w swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id
0 0 0 36 152 276 2332 0 0 52 3 213 31 8 8 84
0 0 0 36 444 180 2208 0 0 40 1 186 30 3 4 93
0 0 0 36 440 180 2212 0 0 0 0 102 4 1 0 99
0 0 0 36 440 180 2212 0 0 0 0 110 24 0 1 98
1 0 1 36 100 124 2192 0 0 174 2 455 192 2 24 74

and then the machine hangs: no further output from vmstat...

With a 2.4.17 kernel with Riks patch, this gives:

procs memory swap io system cpu
r b w swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id

Then I got curious and compiled a vanilla 2.4.17 kernel. Which gives as
result:

procs memory swap io system cpu
r b w swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id
1 0 0 1256 276 404 2556 16 35 84 40 350 42 15 13 72

0 0 0 2360 2924 96 856 5 0 18 0 140 15 0 1 98

This works actually faster, and comparable in speed to the 2.20 kernel I
was using before. So apparently, the changes between 2.4.16 and 2.4.17 suffice
to get the kernel swapping out buffercache. I hope this helps in tuning
the VM system in the right direction...

Greetings,
Daniel

I've been running a few hours of low memory testing with
my rmap VM and it's holding up fine. The system is still
responsive when the amount of pageable RAM is down to
about 400 kB ;))

cheers,

And on a PII/400 limited to "mem=64M", a `dbench 60` running with XMMS
1.2.6 did not cause any noticeable audio breakup. This is on 2.4.17 +
rmap10c + ide.2.4.16.12102001 + Bill's original hashed waitqueues patch.
(I should also add that XMMS was not running with realtime priority.)
I'll see if I can produce some numbers in a bit.

Any chance you could include the results of the following:

/usr/sbin/readprofile -m /boot/System.map-`uname -r` | sort -rn -k1,1 | head
cat /proc/interrupts
cat /proc/slabinfo
cat /proc/meminfo

and a few lines of vmstat 10 ?

Thanks,
Bill
