Subject: [RFC PATCH 00/13] ARM64: meson-gxl: Add extended support

This RFC patchset provides extended peripheral support for the Amlogix GXL SoCs.

The final patchs will be split among the correct subsystems.

In order to support more functionalities, this patchset :
- Moves peripheral nodes to the common Meson arm64 dtsi
- Add i2c, mmc, sd, sdio, pinctrl and clock nodes for GXL
- Adds correct GXL P23X boards uart pinctrl
- Adds the GXL Internal PHY driver
- Add a temporary workaround to select the internal PHY
- Add Ethernet nodes for GXL and the P23X boards
- Add SD/MMC and SDIO WiFi support support for P23X boards

Add driver for the Internal RMII PHY found in the Amlogic Meson GXL SoCs.

This PHY seems to only implement some standard registers and need some

Some magic values are currently used to configure the PHY, and this a
temporary setup until clarification about these registers names and

Subject: [RFC PATCH 08/13] dwmac-meson8b: add support for phy selection

The Meson GXL dwmac Glue Layer also provides switching between an external PHY
and an internal RMII 10/100 PHY.
Add a way to setup the correct PHY switching from a device tree attribute.

Currently, the register format is unknown and this is a temporary workaround
until a clarification on the registers fields is received from Amlogic.

Subject: [RFC PATCH 01/13] pinctrl: meson: Add GXL pinctrl definitions

Add support for the Amlogic Meson GXL SoC, this is a partially complete
definition only based on the Amlogic Vendor tree.

This definition differs a lot from the GXBB and needs a separate entry.

Hi Neil

Can this be made automatic?

The internal PHY appears to be on address 8. Can there also be an
external PHY on address 8? Could you follow the phy-handle link to the
phy node, check the address, and if it is 8, configure for an internal
PHY?

Humm, actually. Maybe PHY_IS_INTERNAL in the phydrv->flags is the
better solution. The MAC can then use phy_is_internal(ndev->phydev) to
decide if this register needs programming.

Hi Andrew,

Yes this would be a good idea if we were able to scan the internal and external PHYs at the same time,
but with our limited knowledge the values we write in the register seems to switch a mux for the whole RMII
and MDIO signals to either interface.

Do you have knowledge if this case is already handled upstream ?

Thanks for your help,
Neil

Ah, O.K. So you need something like:

drivers/net/phy/mdio-mux-mmioreg.c

This seems to be limited to a single byte for the mux register, so you
might need to make some extensions.

This does not really belong in the PHY driver, and this is statically
assigned, I would just drop this.

This is redundant with what PHYLIB will determine for the PHY.

Is all of this really necessary? This should all be reflected in the
standard BMSR register, is not this the case here that we have to read
this non-standard register?

You use genphy_config_aneg(), so surely, the standard auto-negotiation
part works somehow?

Usually the last 4 bits are 0, since that's where the revision part is
located.

> + .features = 0,

You should set PHY_GBIT_FEATURES and set .flags to PHY_IS_INTERNAL since
this is an internal PHY?

Looks good to me. Tell me when I may apply it, it looks orthogonal
to the rest of the patches.

Hi Linus,

I'm ok to have it applied as soon as possible, but I can send a clean non-rfc patch if needed.

Thanks,
Neil

Thanks for the hint, I will try to make use of this !

This is what I understood from the original driver code, but I will make some further tests
and see if the BMSR returns some good data.

Yes, and the BMSR is also used in the config_init here...

I was hoping to have a bit clearer info from the vendor, but based on
vendor BSP, I think we have most of the info, and can do the minor
fixups if/when we get detailed documentation.
