Ug. That is wrong. Fbdev driver are independent of the console layer.
You were right, I missed VT support on the config, added
it and no more compile errors, thanks very much.

Regardless, the number of people falling over this issue is still
somewhere in the region of "silly".
The only people who would want to turn off VT support are likely to
be embedded folks, so why not move this under CONFIG_EMBEDDED ?
and force it to '=y' for everyone else ?

This still doesn't solve the issue with the input api. The input layer
can be modular on many levels. Even if we force the input core to be built in
this will not stop people from building the keyabord drivers as modules.
Having PS/2 support always turned to Y will not also work since there are
systems that use just USB. Their is a point where users will just have to
read the README and follow directions. We can't make people do the right
thing.
Also doing this kind of thing only covers up broken framebuffer
drivers. Unfortunetly its going to take me months to cleanup and make the
fbdev drivers behave right.

That issue seems to have worked itself out now. I think someone already
munged the relevant Kconfig. It's been a while since l-k got a flood of
"I booted 2.5 and my keyboard doesn't work any more", whereas if you
look at all the "2.6test doesn't boot" bug reports of the last week,
and count how many of them were due to CONFIG_VT=n, you'll notice a much
bigger ratio.

One bug at a time. With the CONFIG_EMBEDDED hack, yes it will 'hide'
this problem, but it'll likely be many months before embedded folks
start thinking of using 2.6 anyways.

Its not that the 2.5.X framebuffer layer is not solid. Except for the
software cursor it behaves right. The issue I have is the quality of the
framebuffer drivers. Lets take a example. In the new api we have two new
functions called check_var and set_par. Check_var's job is to test a
passed in mode to see if the hardware can support it. It is not to alter
or change any hardware states. The second function set_par does change the
hardware state. Lets look at the Mach64 driver. Mind you it does work and
functions. We have

We can see here that we first pass var into aty_var_to_crtc to generate a
crtc struct. Then at the end we do the reverse and use that crtc to create
a var. This is horribly done. Now lets look at what is in set_par.

Its being called twice. Once in check_var and again in set_par. Mind you
this works but the implementation is horribly done. I see this done alot
in various drivers. The reason it was done this way was because people
wanted a quick port to the new api without thinking much about it.
What makes me sad is I added accel hooks to speed up the console but I
don't see anyone using there accel engines. Everyone is just using my soft
accel functions :-( Using the soft accel was to be the exception not the
rule.

Sorry, any vendor contemplating shipping 2.6test in a device at this stage
is a lunatic. I don't care about lunatics. As we saw recently there
are a lot of wireless routers and the like out there all stuck on some
magical 2.4.5 kernel. That sucks, but it's at least better than putting
beta quality code in something people pay money for.

Well, the good old embedded process is this:
Take what's availlable (2.4.5 then).
Adapt to the hardware.
Test for a while.
Ship it.
Don't touch it anymore.
So what is lunatic about doing the same with 2.6test? It may make the
test a little more expensive, but the adaptation will be cheaper, so
you are just about even. And the result is no less frightening than a
2.4.2 kernel with various backports from 2.4.younameit, and even more
quick hacks.
The only thing we agree on is that it would be loony to port known
working hardware to a newer kernel.

Simple, there are known problems in 2.6.0test.

The VM was enough of a problem for one flamewar or another. There is
even a faint memory of major construction work around 2.4.10.
You may be right for an x86 design that work out of the box, but I got
used to extensive adjustments and just as extensive test afterwards.
If those test are successful, the kernel is stable by definition,
whatever the known problems may be.

Strange that CONFIG_VT would get set to no. Another huge issue is that
people are configuring several framebuffer drivers to run the same piece
of hardware.

A number of people seem to be seeing regressions with vesafb too.
Configs that worked with 2.4 give a blank screen, and lock up under 2.5
I believe vga=791 was one such option.

They are forgetting to set CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE.
P.S
I have had VESA compiled without framebuffer console but with mdacon
instead. If they would log in a do a cat /dev/urandom > /dev/fb0 they
would see that the VESA fbdev driver is functional.
