Hi Andrew,

2.6.15-mm1 seems to be working less than perfect on my box.

Everything seems to be fine in console mode, but once I start X and
then login and KDE starts, the box locks up solid while loading KDE
(dies every time at the exact same spot, the "Initializing
peripherals" stage on the KDE splash screen).

Unfortunately not much makes it to the logs. The only things I can
find is this :

Jan 6 00:18:39 dragon kernel: [ 19.479000] Write protecting the
kernel read-only data: 333k
Jan 6 00:18:57 dragon kernel: [ 46.416000] EDAC PCI- Signaled
System Error on 0000:00:18.2
Jan 6 00:18:57 dragon kernel: [ 46.416000] EDAC PCI- Master Data
Parity Error on 0000:00:18.2
Jan 6 00:18:57 dragon kernel: [ 46.416000] EDAC PCI- Detected
Parity Error on 0000:00:18.2
<<<here I power off the system since it's locked solid>>>

mainline 2.6.15 is rock solid.

Here are some details about my system (I included everything I could
think might be relevant, but please do ask if there's anything else
you need) and at the end my .config for 2.6.15-mm1 (based on the one I
use for 2.6.15 with 'make oldconfig') ;

note: all the following info was gathered while running my working
2.6.15 kernel, if it matters I can boot 2.6.15-mm1 in console mode and
gather the same or more - just let me know.

Just did. Reverted that one patch, then rebuild/reinstalled the kernel
(with the same .config) and booted it - no change. It still locks up
in the exact same spot.
X starts & runs fine (sort of) since I can play around at the kdm
login screen all I want, it's only once I actually login and KDE
proper starts that it locks up.

Oh bugger. No serial console/netconsole or such?

Or are you able log in and then quickly do the alt-ctrl-F1 thing, see if we
get an oops?

Unfortunately no, I currently only have this one machine available.

I'll try, I'll also try and see if I can get something into logs by
playing with sysrq, but that'll all have to wait until tomorrow
evening, right now I need some sleep - I'll report back.

If those occur just at boot then they may be noise from the bios setup.
Can you build without EDAC and check if that stops the crash. It
shouldn't stop it crashing but if it does then its important to know

I switched to tty1 right after logging in, and after a few seconds
(corresponding pretty well with the time it takes to hit the same spot
where it crashed all previous times) I got a lot of nice crash info
scrolling by.
Actually a *lot* scrolled by, a rough guestimate says some 4-6 (maybe
more) screens scrolled by, and since the box locks up solid I couldn't
scroll up to get at the initial parts :( So all I have for you is the
final block - hand copied from the screen using pen and paper, so
please excuse any typos I may have made :

Bad page state in process 'kded'

Trying to fix it up, but a reboot is needed

Hope that helps a bit even though it's the last and thus least
interresting block of info.

It never makes it to the logs, and as mentioned previously I don't
have another machine to capture on via netconsole or serial, so if you
have any good ideas as to how to capture it all, then I'm all ears.

If only someone did a patch to pause the text output after the first oops..

Oh wait! Someone did!

umm, it'd be more helpful if you'd actually sent the patch so Jesper could
apply it so we can find this bug.

I think I did one of those too. It required a new kernel boot option
`halt-after-oops' or some such. Sounds like a good idea?

I thought Jesper had made a comment in that thread, so was aware of it.
Looking at the archive, I see was mistaken.

I just build a new 2.6.15-mm1 with the same config as before excet for
the fact that I took out the EDAC support.
It doesn't stop the crash. It still crashes at the same spot, but in a
slightly different manner.
Switching to tty1 just before the crash allowed me to write down the
last bit of several pages of output (copied by hand, so I left out
addresses an offsets, it's quite reproducable though, so if you want
that info I'll crash again and write it down for you) - here's what I
managed to get :

Nope, you are were not mistaken, I did make a comment in that thread
(http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/1/5/204), but that thread had completely
slipped my mind, thank you for the reminder.

Thanks, I'll apply that (and raise the timeout somewhat, since 2min is
far from enough time for me to write down an entire Oops by hand -
wouldn't it be better if it simply spun in a loop until some magic key
(like enter, esc, break or something) is pressed? Then you have all
the time you might need).

I'll hopefully post a "first Oops" in a little while - stay tuned ;)

btw: your patch is missing a small bit. You need to #include
<linux/nmi.h> in arch/i386/kernel/traps.c or you'll get

arch/i386/kernel/traps.c: In function `show_registers':
arch/i386/kernel/traps.c:300: warning: implicit declaration of
function `touch_nmi_watchdog'

I'd prefer the halt after oops option, since I often reboot remotely
(ssh) and may not notice boot failed until I get around to opening
new ssh session to target. It's only then that I'll go front the
sulking target's console ;)

Grant.

Ok, this is with a pristine 2.6.15-mm1 + Dave's oops-pausing-patch
Captured by switching to tty1 just after logging in via kdm.
A *lot* of info still scrolls down when the problem hits before Daves
patch stops it at a BUG dump, it scrolls by too fast for me to see
what it is, but I guess it must be warning/error messages other than
Oops's or BUG()'s ???

Anyway, here's the entire contents of my screen after Daves patch
stops the output - again written down by hand and then typed in from
my handwritten notes, so there may be typos, but I've tried to be
accurate.

There might be something wrong with Dave's patch. Or yes, this might be
the first oops.

Gad. That's a lot of work, thanks. Serial console is easier...

Is your screen set to 50 rows? That helps. As does a digital camera.

My first thought was 'slab poison', but you don't have slab debugging turned on.
Randy's followup to my patch: http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/1/5/15
had another trick that may be useful. It'll slow down printk's
to a point where you might be able to see what happened.

another trick may be to just add a for (;;) into the BUG macro.

Hmm, you had hit bad_page(), so that may be a more useful place
to add a pause.
