Hello all,
Recently, I upgraded my poor Socket7 system from a P166 to a AMD
K6-2 running at 400 MHz.
The only change I made to my kernel config with the upgrade was
to add in MTRR support.
My kernel is a stock 2.2.18pre25, with the addition of the S3
framebuffer patch found at colonel-panic.
At any rate, prior to adding MTRR support, the machine was
stable as a rock.
Afterwards, on console, it was still stable as a rock.
However, in X I get *random* lock-ups (sometimes when gdm
starts, sometimes when using gmc, etc.)
Disabling MTRR seems to have cured the problem, for now (I
haven't *seen* anything random *yet*; I'll report back if I do.)
I'm using XFree 3.3.6, and the SVGA server.
Ideas?

Huh, the same problem, lockups with K6-2 500MHz but with
another S3 card.
I have changed only the CPU from K6-2 266 (overclocked to 300, running
stable for more than 2 years) with a K6-2 500MHz model 8 stepping 12.
The change occured in 2.2.18pre19 but I tried with different kernels:
2.2.18pre19 - plain, no MTRR support
2.2.17 - plain, no MTRR support
2.2.18pre22 - with 2.2.18pre21aa2 and ide patches, with MTRR support
2.4.0-test11 - plain, with MTRR support
When MTRR support is compiled in, I don't put any settings in /proc/mtrr
Sometimes the lockups are forever (I don't wait them for more
than 15mins => power off) or for 3-5 seconds, mouse stops, vmstat
shows 100% user CPU busy in these 3-5 seconds, 17 blocks written:

The CPU is cold. The problems occur when there is no big
CPU/disk activity. It can work without problems even when I make bzImage
or running benchmark software (nbench).
Tested on XFree 3.3.5 and 3.3.6: the same lockups. The lockups can occur
when I switch the virtual destktops from the KDE panel, when working
with the pine program or when starting new console terminal on the same
desktop. No problems in text consoles, only in KDE 1.1.2 and 2.0. Two
times I saw something strange: the video image was zoomed and showed
twice in the upper half of the screen. No lockups but switching to/from
text consoles solves the problem.
Tested with Windows 95/98, works on the same hardware with no
problems!!!
The hardware:
Video S3 GX2 4MB AGP, Motherboard: Shuttle 591P Via MVP3,
BIOS image 591pwiqf, 192MB RAM
Bus 1, device 0, function 0:
VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. ViRGE/GX2 (rev 6).
Medium devsel. IRQ 10. Master Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=4.Max Lat=255.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xd0000000 [0xd0000000].
So, is this a S3 problem with many different cards or this is a
K6-2 stepping 12 problem, kernel K6 support or XFree problem?

the kernel.
If MTRR is compiled into the kernel, I get lock-ups in X *only*, and
the entire machine locks.
I have no data on other CPUs; as I said, I previously had a P166, so
no MTRR there to compare against.
I assume that since you had a K6 266 earlier, with no problems, that
the problem must exist in this model and stepping of the CPU
(otherwise, if it were X you would have seen the problem
previously. Ditto for the kernel).
Kernel gurus, ideas for a workaround, other than "Don't use MTRR"?

After doing some googling....
It would appear that, in Family 5, Model 8, Stepping 12 of the K6-2,
AMD used a different CPU core, that was more similar to the K6-3, and
that there is a slightly odd way of doing write-combining.
Perhaps this is the problem?
Anyone with more knowledge on the AMD cores care to comment?

Just to check the important facts (correct any of this if it is
wrong): In 2.2.18, the problem appears when you enable MTRR support,
but goes away when you disable MTRR support. You are using the vesafb
driver. You are running XFree86-3.x.
Are you passing any vesafb options on the kernel command line?
If not, this is very strange, because the 2.2.18 mtrr.c (or any other)
should not be touching the MTRR registers (or whatever the K6 calls
them) unless you do something to /proc/mtrr.
If I understood why the MTRR driver was doing something on the K6-2,
then model-specific differences might make some sense. But currently,
I don't see why there would be any difference between "MTRR disabled"
and "MTRR enabled, but not used".

If I'm not mistaken, X /does/ touch the MTRR's, which would explain why
it is X that crashes.

On total lockup I can't activate ikd nor to use sysrq.
I can reproduce the temporary lockups afetr 1 minute of testing and
usually receive the above message. I have a ktrace output (not
sure if I catch the problem in this output) and this strace -r for
the XF86_SVGA program:

So, I'm not sure whether the problem is in XFree or is
hardware/kernel related. IMO, it is not related to the MTRR
support. Any ideas for testing are welcome!

server, and then adding back in MTRRs, seems to have solved the

I'm using XF86_SVGA and it seems the s3v driver in 3.3.* and
may be 4.0.* (as mentioned in the xfree-xpert list) has problem with
the right usage of the accel FIFO for the GX2 cards. Not sure for
your S3Trio32/64 card. It seems the faster CPU and the AGP speed hits the
problem. I see some problems in the image (some dots are missing from
different letters, sometimes).
regs3v.h approximates the loop to 6 seconds:
#define MAXLOOP 0xffffff /* timeout value for engine waits, ~6 secs */
For my CPU the lockup takes 4.8 seconds. Not sure why they are
sometimes infinite.
So, I'm leaving this mail list, it seems this is a s3v driver
problem.

Only in XFree86-4.x (I never distributed my MTRR patches for
XFree86-3.x ;-). Which is why the XFree86 version was one of the
things I wanted to confirm.
