Subject: [Bluez-devel] bluetooth headset - connects but no audio

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

hi everybody,

it's some time I'm trying to get my BT headset to work with btsco, but
with no results.

the problem, which I found reported but not answered in a forum on the
bluetooth-alsa sourceforge project page
(https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=3Ddetail&atid=3D678259&aid=3D10679=
46&group_id=3D116589),
is I can connect to the headset (see log above), set volume from pc, see
events, and even hear a hissing sound, but I can't hear any sound using
aplay, nor record anything; the programs just hang.

I hope this issue is not an already well known and solved; if so it is,
please redirect me to where the info I need are, thanks.

Else, here are some logs as suggested to report; I omitted the output of
`hcidump -x` because it is very long, but I can of course provide it if
necessary.

thanks in advance for helping me.

BT dongle: Trust BT180 (USB, works fine with other devices, like my T39
phone)
BT headset: Ericsson HBH-35 (works fine as phone headset)

I asked Marcel on this list, but I did not understand his answer...:

| the Silicon Wave chips are not the best ones. They have problems and it
| seems that they are not going to fix them. Mostly because they sell ROM
| chips are these ones can't be updated by a newer firmware. However if
| this is the problem with SCO packets and handle 0 then the hci_usb
| driver should simply drop these frames, because they are not valid SCO
| payload.

...?

I'm not sure if he means that there are to many packages recieved now,
or that the packages are dropped because of the 0 handle. I think that
might be hot-fixable somehow, at least for one connection. Of course
this is ugly, but if it's optional just to make this broken chipsets work?

best regards,
~ Lars

Don't know, things are quite straight-forward in there. Activate sco

No, because headsets use the sco data transmission, while most other
services should use rfcomm data channels. So it's quite possible that
while other things work well, there's a problem with the dongle when it
comes to the sco channels.

Try it... I don't know. I prefer the vanilla kernels with gentoo...
don't know why. But they work well (on my systems at least).

I don't know what patches are in this kernel, you can check the ebuild
and try to find out :)

using a vanilla with mh1 makes error tracking simpler, because if there
are no other patches in the kernel nobody will scream "try the vanilla
first..." ;)

Sounds like it might be the fault of the dongle, or the bluez stack has

no, it's not patched with mh1. Best thing would be to use the vanilla
kernel (i.e. get it directly from kernel.org) and patch it with -mh1
patchset from bluez. I'm using gentoo, too, btw, so it should work this w=

it should. You can use this as the simplest and fool-proof testing
method, as it does not involve any alsa library stuff beyond the
snd-bt-sco-kernel module itself, so there are not many other error
sources than the dongle and the headself itself.

Maybe there's a problem with the hci_usb implementation for your dongle..=
.

| Sounds like it might be the fault of the dongle, or the bluez stack has
| an issue with it. Did you try with M$windows?

no, nor I can try. my pc is M$ stuff free :)

| no, it's not patched with mh1. Best thing would be to use the vanilla
| kernel (i.e. get it directly from kernel.org) and patch it with -mh1
| patchset from bluez. I'm using gentoo, too, btw, so it should work this
| way.

I'd rather keeping the gentoo-dev kernel. isn't it possible to patch it?

| it should. You can use this as the simplest and fool-proof testing
| method, as it does not involve any alsa library stuff beyond the
| snd-bt-sco-kernel module itself, so there are not many other error
| sources than the dongle and the headself itself.

I'll have another try so..

| Maybe there's a problem with the hci_usb implementation for your dongle=
...

I'll try with another dongle when I'll be able to (it belongs to a
friend of mine, I should see him soon)

3.

sure, I'll have a try with the dongle of a friend of mine. what's sure
is that with my dongle on another computer, the headset doesn't work..

| What kernel version do you use? Make sure it's 2.6.10 and you have the
| -mh1 patches added.

the kernel is a 2.6.10-r5 from gentoo; I don't know if it's patched, but
I'll check

| you might also want to try to fire up alsamixer [-c1] and enable the
| "loopback" so that you can/should hear yourself (simply fires back the
| audio to the headset directly).

I tried alsamixer, and could set the volume level (and even hear the
hissing sound become louder or weaker). I can't remember if unmuting the
loopback didn't simply work, or if I wasn't able to unmute, for a reason
or another it didn't work :(

I own a HBH-35 myself and it works very well...

Do you have another dongle available to test this? I use an epox bt-dg03.

What kernel version do you use? Make sure it's 2.6.10 and you have the
- -mh1 patches added.

you might also want to try to fire up alsamixer [-c1] and enable the
"loopback" so that you can/should hear yourself (simply fires back the
audio to the headset directly).

best regards,
