Subject: [PATCH v4 0/7] rtw88: add wowlan support for 8822c

From: Yan-Hsuan Chuang <[email protected]>

Add wake on wireless LAN support for 8822c. When system enters
suspend, wifi driver can enable wowlan mode, and waits for
waking host up by receiving wireless LAN events. Events could
be AP lost, deauthed, magic packets, rekey, or patterns. Also
most of the functions can be shutdown to reduce power consumption.

To enter wowlan mode, Realtek's devices need to swap to another
firmware called wowlan firmware. It can monitor special events
and generate wake up signals if necessary. To swap the firmware,
driver needs to re-configure the HCI link, to make sure that
the link is idle, reset the link for sending H2C commands to
wowlan firmware, and then stop the link.

After wake up signals generated and sent to host, driver needs
to swap back to normal firmware to get to the original state
before suspend. So it should setup the link again and send
H2C commands to firmware to restore the information.

v2 -> v3
* include new patch "rtw88: add interface config for 8822c"

Subject: [PATCH v4 2/7] rtw88: pci: reset dma when reset pci trx ring

From: Chin-Yen Lee <[email protected]>

When PCI trx rings are reset, the DMA engine should also be reset.
Otherswise, the rx_tag of rx flow is not synchronous to hw.

Remove DMA reset when rtw_pci_start() as we added it in
rtw_pci_setup().

Subject: [PATCH v4 3/7] rtw88: add interface config for 8822c

From: Yan-Hsuan Chuang <[email protected]>

Some devices need to configure interface/HCI related reigsters
in power on flow. Add interface_cfg for HCI for the settings.

The driver only supports RTL8822BE/RTL8822CE now, and since
RTL8822BE does not need to configure PCIE, the configuration
is only added for RTL8822CE. Without it, some of the RTL8822CE
device can crash and disconnected to host in suspend/wowlan mode.

Subject: [PATCH v4 7/7] rtw88: Add wowlan net-detect support

From: Chin-Yen Lee <[email protected]>

Net-detect is an option of wowlan to allow the device to
be woken up from suspend mode when configured network is detected.

When user enables net-detect and lets the device enter suspend
state, wowlan firmware will periodically scan until beacon or
probe response of configured networks are received.
Between two scans, wowlan firmware keeps wifi chip in idle mode
to reduce power consumption. If configured networks are detected,
wowlan firmware will trigger resume process.

Subject: [PATCH v4 6/7] rtw88: Add wowlan pattern match support

From: Chin-Yen Lee <[email protected]>

Pattern match is an option of wowlan to allow the device
to be woken up from suspend mode when receiving packets
matched user-designed patterns.

The patterns are written into hardware cam in suspend flow
if users have set up them. If packets matched designed
pattern are received, wowlan firmware will get an interrupt
and then wake up the device.

Subject: [PATCH v4 5/7] rtw88: support wowlan feature for 8822c

From: Chin-Yen Lee <[email protected]>

Wake on WLAN(wowlan) is a feature which allows devices
to be woken up from suspend state through wlan events.

When user enables wowlan feature and then let the device
enter suspend state, wowlan firmware will be loaded by
the driver and periodically monitors wifi packets.
Power consumption of wifi chip will be reduced in this
state.

If wowlan firmware detects that specific wlan event
happens, it will issue wakeup signal to trigger resume
process. Driver will load normal firmware and let wifi
chip return to the original state.

Currently supported wlan events include receiving magic packet,
rekey packet and deauth packet, and disconnecting from AP.

Hi,

I'm a bit late, as this is already upstream, but this is *really* not a
good implementation. A few comments below:

^^ This is pretty nasty. At least log an error or something? But see

I'm pretty sure it's not valid to look at 'pkt_pattern->pattern' without
also accounting for the ->mask. Same for all the other if/else here.

^^ This is really bad behavior -- you're not logging anything or
reporting any error back to the caller; you're just silently ignoring
pattern, IIUC. That threw me for a loop for longer than I care to admit,
since I wasn't specifying the MAC address in my pattern configurations,
and so you were silently declaring my pattern "invalid."

Is there a really good reason for this behavior? Can't you choose some
useful behavior if you don't have enough information to determine
{uni, multi, broad}cast here? I see these are actually a bitfield above,
when you program to the firmware, so maybe an _WILDCARD_CAST option?

This also hints at a deficiency in the wowlan APIs: nl80211_set_wowlan()
only honors a pre-set set of restrictions, like min/max pattern length,
max offset. For restrictions like this, we either need a wiphy callback,
such that rtw88 can reject arbitrary patterns, or else some additional
declarative fields in 'struct wiphy_wowlan_support'.

Indeed, I'm not even sure what we fill in there. Perhaps whatever
userspace happened to have there, including potentially uninitialized
data?

Yeah, well, we didn't dream up arbitrary restrictions when the API was
added :-)

It's maybe a bit harder now to add them, but we can do it in cfg80211,
and reject it if the conditions are not met, and then older userspace
will simply not be able to figure out easily why it was rejected, if it
doesn't understand some new features bits/capability advertisement, I
guess?

I guess I'm not a huge fan of just arbitrarily returning errors when
something went wrong and userspace cannot figure out why (vs. advertised
restrictions like what we have now), but I guess that'd still be better
than nothing ...

Ideally, this can just be fixed; if not, IMHO better to add some
advertisement bits, but if not then we can surely add some kind of
filter callback that's invoked at config time, rather than only at
suspend time when it's way too late to do anything about it.

Sure, I didn't expect that sort of foresight ;)
I was just highlighting that (if rtw88 can't fix it some other way)
rtw88 may need to extend the current APIs.

Seems reasonable.

Yes, I'd like to see what Realtek folks have to say.

Yeah, I'd have to see what sort of restrictions we're working with --
sufficiently complex rules might not make for good "advertisement"
bits.

Thanks for your thoughts,
Brian

Agree. And we've certainly gotten better at spelling out what exactly
when wrong since all this started - the "extended ACK" bits I wrote that
can include an error message and can point to the bad attribute still
feel sort of new to me, even if we've had them for a few years :)

So if we end up going with a callback, we should probably include an
extack pointer for the driver to fill up ...
