Subject: No PCI-X / PCI-E cards on Intel Bigby-P MCH / ICH9R

Hi,

I have a Tyan Bigby-P S5217, with a stock debian 2.6.31 kernel, which
apparently doesn't "see" the cards I plug (it sees its internal
peripherals fine).

I first plugged a wifi PCI card into a PCI-X slot (there's no PCI slot),
it didn't appear in lspci. As I thought it was a voltage problem (PCI-X
only accept 3.3v, not 5v IIRC) I bought a PCI-E one.
It's still not seen in lspci.

The only maybe-kind-of relevant things I see in dmesg are:

[ 0.162705] PCI: MCFG configuration 0: base f0000000 segment 0 buses 0 - 16
[ 0.164635] PCI: BIOS Bug: MCFG area at f0000000 is not reserved in ACPI motherboard resources
[ 0.164722] PCI: Not using MMCONFIG.

[ 0.184095] PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
[ 0.184098] pci 0000:00:1c.0: BAR 13: can't allocate resource

Does anyone know what I can do to pinpoint the problem ?

Thanks,
Xav

PS: lspci & dmesg follow, please Cc: me on answers.

When does this message appear? Does it matter if the PCIe card is
installed or not? This 0000:00:1c.0 device is:

> 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 02)

so it might be relevant.

Did you try all the PCIe slots?

No. I'll try that as soon as I can stop it for a while.

BTW, it there any problem putting a PCIe x1 card into a x4 or x16 slot ?

Thanks.

The card has to force 33 MHz non-PCI-X mode. I'd check if the "pins" 38B
(PCIXCAP) and 49B (M66EN) are both connected to GND. Also you can try
inserting another PCI card into another PCI-X slot (in the same bus
segment), this may force 33 PCI mode (check if the other card is
detected).

I tried another slot, and it gave the same error:
[ 0.203279] PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
[ 0.203279] pci 0000:00:1c.0: BAR 13: can't allocate resource

And the card still isn't visible through lspci.

How comes the kernel can't see that card ?

It looks like if the board has been flashed with the wrong bios (the
dmidecode info isn't consistent with what I see on the board).
Is there a way to workaround that in the kernel ?

Wrong BIOS is pretty fundamental -- the BIOS could have messed up many
undocumented (and possibly write-once) register settings etc. The
kernel can work around slighly broken ACPI tables or things like that,
but if, say, undocumented write-only north bridge registers are wrong,
not much we can do about that.

Really you better just get the right BIOS on the board.

Well, after a bit of googling and searching in tyan.com (ftp and http),
it seems I'm out of luck: it's an OEM mobo, unsupported by Tyan. BIOS is
nowhere to be found.
As it looks like some other (supported) board has the same components
(S5211 for the curious), maybe I'll try to flash its BIOS if I get
bored.

Thanks, happy $CELEBRATION,

BTW, when I try 2 PCI cards in both PCI-X slots, the machine doesn't
start (it stays in soft-off state).
