Subject: [RFC] [PATCH] omnibus header cleanup, certification

This patch is being sent to each person listed as a MAINTAINER
of a header file affected by it.

Weeks ago I [1]posted patches ([2],[3]) to fix undisciplined macro
definitions in 116 header files. The patches still apply unchanged
to kernels 2.5 and to 2.4.16.

I noted later[4] that...
> There are certainly dozens of more-subtle bug sources (e.g. [5],[6]) in
> the kernel, and I would love to help smoke them out, but I can't afford
> to do that if it's a hundred times as much work to get the resulting
> patches accepted as to find and fix them in the first place.

Alan suggested I send the patches directly to all the MAINTAINERs
affected and ask each of you to certify them. I have attached the
patches directly to this e-mail.

Please review at least the portion that you are responsible for,
and verify that the changes are safe and cannot change the semantics
of otherwise-correct code that uses the affected macros. (That will
be easy, they're all trivial parenthesizations. It seems worth noting
here that in the C grammar, "-1" is not a numeric literal, but a unary
expression.) Then, pass on your evaluation to Linus and Marcelo.

Many of the affected files do not have a current maintainer. Please
consider certifying the changes to the orphaned files as well.

Note that there is no way I can afford to keep track of whether each
of 116 separate patches were taken, and resubmit them, so I am asking
that the patches be taken wholesale once a few maintainers have
certified that the changes really are as benign as they (so obviously)
are.

It's also worth noting that there is nothing that it can get confused
with and still have a compilable expression.

I don't believe the unary-expression patches are necessary. They are,
of course, harmless, except for the fact that my eyes glazed over
staring at page after page of these, which very few actual potential (!)
bugs (there were a couple, like the iopage+ ones...)

Well, here you get my ok ...

Not true, in principle. E.g.

#define foo -1
...
char f(char* a) { return foo[a]; } // -a[1] or a[-1]?

Such an expression should, of course, be taken out and shot (although
it's far less bad than "(x = x++ % y)" that appeared in a macro until
very recently).

The only compound expressions that are strictly safe have one of
the forms

(...)
a.b
a->b
a[...]

because those are the only operators at the top precedence level.
Even with those, an ill-defined macro that replaces "a" or "b"
(such as are found in de4x5.h) can cause confusion.

> I don't believe the unary-expression patches are necessary.

One #define found in a mips header is identical to another that was in
an i386 header and already caused a bug. That was what motivated me to
see if there were other cases, too.

If this patch is accepted, I will be motivated to report more subtle
sources of bugs, which remain numerous. If we can't even be bothered
with the basics, who can care about subtleties?

I assure you it was no less boring making the patch. I hope not to
have to keep re-making it as the existing patch rots.

The point of making a wholesale change including even "unnecessary"
definitions that are "unlikely" to result in bugs (such as "-1"),
is to establish a convention so that people who don't necessarily
understand all the nuances will do the right thing anyhow. There
is certainly plenty of code from such people in the kernel, heaven
help us.

OK, you win :)

Well, there are cases, where -1 and (-1) make a difference (see below)
but these are extremely unlikely to appear in the kernel src code.
Thus, I also think these patches are unnecessary.

For example,

int *p; and int *p
-1[p]; (-1)[p];

are both valid and compilable code segments, with no undefined or
implementation-defined behavior (as long as p points to an element of
an array other than the first and last), and both code segments do
different things.

ack.

Marcelo,

The attached portion of Nathan's patch looks good to me. Could you
please apply it on your tree?

Nathan, note that I'm not responsible for the files in asm-ia64/sn/*.
I will forward your mail to the relevant people at SGI, though.

Thanks,
