Subject: ACPI issues on HP DL585 G2

Greetings,

When running pretty much anything newer than 2.6.22, both the cciss
module and the bnx2 module get stuck in a "Loading" state in
/proc/modules. As cciss contains my root partition, I get dropped
into an initrd after a while because root can't be found. After some
googleing, etc, I saw a bunch of recommendations to add
"pci=noapic noapic" to the command-line. After I did that, the box
booted fine under 2.6.29. I figured people might like to hear about
this issue though. Attached are a dmesg from 2.6.22 and a dmesg from
2.6.29 (w/ the noapic options). I've also included the output of
hpasmcli -s "show server". If there's anything else that would be
useful to help figure this out, please let me know.

Thanks,

Stephen

Thanks for the suggestion. Technically, it's Debian kernel 2.6.29-4,
which includes 2.6.29.2. Is there a specific change in a later version
that fixes this issue?

I'll try and schedule downtime to try a later kernel soon.

Thanks,

Stephen

Hi,

I'm just scanning mail on the weekend, but what version of the
BIOS are you on? Do you have the latest?

Thanks.

Yes, I upgraded using the 8.5 CD before trying 2.6.29 (again). I do see
a commit included in 2.6.30 which appears to address what Yinghai Lu
pointed out in his mail. I'm going to try and test 2.6.30 today or
tomorrow.

BTW, it'd be nice if the firmware update CD was either shown under every
OS, or if it was somehow at the level before the OS selection, was
annoyingly difficult to find since it wasn't under the Debian OS link.
:)

Thanks,

Stephen

dmesg from 2.6.30 (w/ pci=noapic noapic) attached. Box didn't boot
again, but we did get a "hung process" message from the kernel after a
while. I don't have more info than that about the boot w/o pci=noapic
noapic, sorry. I can try and get that info at another time if this
isn't enough.

Thanks,

Stephen

Check the message I just posted, it includes a dmesg under 2.6.30 (also
with noapic, since it didn't boot w/o it again).

They might not.. I did upgrade the BIOS to the latest revision and I
don't recall if the last 2.6.22 boot was before or after the BIOS
upgrade. The 2.6.29 and 2.6.30 boots (both w/o APIC) are from the same
BIOS. Would it help to try booting under 2.6.22 with the BIOS that's on
there now?

Is there some other information I could provide while the machine is
running? Unfortunately, this is a rather important box for us.

Thanks,

Stephen

put debug in /boot/grub/grub.conf for the kernel
and boot with serial console enabled...
to capture all.

The other DL585 G2 that I've got with the latest BIOS/etc, running under
2.6.29, has a P800 installed, and it's working fine. Actually, the
other DL585 G2's that we had problems running something newer than
2.6.22 on also had P600's.. It was quite a while ago that we tried to
upgrade those (around 2.6.26), but I'm guessing if we tried now we'd hit
the same issue.

Don't suppose you can grab a P600 from somewhere and try?

Thanks,

Stephen

On the other hand, my coworker tells me that he tried swapping in a P800
on this DL585 and it didn't solve the problem at the time. Specifics
are a bit difficult (this was last year sometime).

Thanks,

Stephen

Ok - though my question was to understand what is different between
this DL585 and the other DL585s you have that are working.

Well, I've got 4 DL585 G2's:

durin - running 2.6.22 w/ P800 fine (had problems w/ 2.6.26)
stormcrow - running 2.6.22 w/ P800 fine (had problems w/ 2.6.26)
aragorn - running 2.6.29 w/ P800 fine
vardamir - running 2.6.30 w/ P600 (needs noacpi to boot)

vardamir used to have a QLogic Fibrechannel card in it as well, but I
pulled that over the weekend to see if that was causing the problem.
Didn't change anything though.

I don't think there's anything else all that special about these
systems. aragorn's got 64G, the other 3 have 16G, I think they've all
got a full complement of SAS drives, etc.

Do you want me to pull dmesg/lspci/etc/etc from all these systems?
Would it help? What would you like to see, specifically?

Thanks,

Stephen

Yeah, it's working fine on some of my other DL585's too. :/ I've really
got no idea what's up with this box. Thanks for the info tho.

I did post updates including dmesg output from the problem box w/ ACPI
enabled and 'debug' on the cmdline. If you'd like me to send them
directly to you also, just let me know.

Thanks,

Stephen

Yeah, I have a P600 installed in this DL585.

lspci -v for the P600:

42:02.0 RAID bus controller: Hewlett-Packard Company Smart Array P600
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company 3 Gb/s SAS RAID
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 120, IRQ 11
Memory at dfef0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K]
I/O ports at 3000 [size=256]
Memory at dfe80000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at de000000 [disabled] [size=256K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: cciss

Of course, it seems to work ok under 2.6.22..

Thanks,

Stephen

What about your other working DL585 boxes? Are they G2's, and are they
also using P600s?

can you make sure the P800 or P600 are in same pci-x slot?

I'll see if I can find one. Though, if you're comfortable building
your own kernels for testing, a git bisect might help.

Got one, and I am able to reproduce a hang while initializing
cciss. I'll try narrowing down the issue.

Great! Glad to hear it. If there's anything I can do to help, please
let me know.

Thanks,

Stephen

Here's what I've found.

Bisecting the hang lands on this commit, which went in right before
2.6.26 went final:

77b96bd: cciss: fix regression that no device nodes are created
if no logical drives

This seems to have caused problems for 2.6.26 era kernels (including
Debian's current stable release). I'm not sure if this problem still
exists in 2.6.31-rc1, because I think we are hitting an earlier issue
which also manifests as a hang.

In 2.6.31-rc1, I see a hang while trying to request the firmware
version using sendcmd_withirq(). If I switch this to a sendcmd(), it
proceeds until the next sendcmd_withirq(). /proc/interrupts shows a 0
count for all cpus on the chosen IRQ line (26). This makes me wonder
if its related to the issue:
