Subject: kernel oops with extended serial stuff turned on...

Or maybe it's not exactly an oops.....

Unfortunately I do not have the .config for this....
I do know that I had EVERY serial option turned on since I was trying to
find a specific device....
See below:

I saw this same warning/problem in my out-of-tree drivers when the
"TTY_DRIVER_NO_DEVFS" flag went away somewhere between 2.6.17 and
2.6.18.

You need to change this line:

isicom_normal->flags = TTY_DRIVER_REAL_RAW;

To:

isicom_normal->flags = TTY_DRIVER_REAL_RAW |
TTY_DRIVER_DYNAMIC_DEV;

In the "drivers/char/isicom.c" file.

In my out-of-tree drivers, yes, it was the correct way to fix
the problem.

I am probably not the best one to ask about the
other serial drivers however...

The "DEVFS" stuff was removed by Greg KH, I believe, so
he probably is the best to decide upon the correct way of
"fixing" it.

Ie, I am not sure whether his intentions were to slide in a
new patch on it later on to fix the problem with trying to
register with sysfs/udev twice...

I don't understand, what problem is occuring here? Who is trying to
register with sysfs twice?

The original warning/error he gets is:

things
> with the same name in the same directory.

Presumably this means that "ttyM0" was already registered with
sysfs/udev already...

In my out-of-tree driver's case, I used to use "TTY_DRIVER_NO_DEVFS" as
a flag.

When that flag went away, I did not put in "TTY_DRIVER_DYNAMIC_DEV" by
mistake,
and I got the same error as Greg C.
I had to push in "TTY_DRIVER_DYNAMIC_DEV" to fix my problem...

I don't know much (anything) about the isicom.c driver, so maybe I am
reading
something into that error that shouldn't be read into it...

Yes (sysfs, not udev, there is no kernel portion of udev, sorry).

What other driver is using the ttyM0 name?

Any pointer to your driver's code so I can see if you are doing
something odd here? Any reason it's just not in the main kernel tree so
I would have fixed it up at the time I did the other fixes?

Sorry,
I probably shouldn't have brought my driver up,
its just confusing things. =)

Greg C is not running any of my out-of-tree drivers,
or even using one of our (Digi) boards.

I just saw his warning/error, and noticed it was the same as what I saw
back when 2.6.18 was released, so I figured I would hop in and
explain what I did to fix the problem in my driver...

(BTW, the error turns up a few times in a google of...
"don't try to register things with the same name in the same directory."
I wonder if all the "tty" ones are all related...)

In Greg C's case, he turned on *all* the serial options in "make config",
because he wasn't sure which serial card he had...

Turns out that the driver/char/isicom.c driver claimed his board, and then
tried to register the ttyM0 name, which apparently someone else
in the kernel did already...

You have a good point tho, we probably should actually look at /dev/ttyM0
on his system, and see who is actually claiming it already...

This is not a good idea, because the driver doesn't call tty_register_device at
all. It fixes it, because it doesn't "reserve" the names and you can silently
register the other driver, that might use it. This is wrong.

We have a few options:
- rewrite them to use TTY_DRIVER_DYNAMIC_DEV (I'm going to do this in isicom anyway)
- rename tty->names (will this something break? udev should cope with this,
doesn't it?)
- any other solution?

Hi Jiri,

Well, what I did in my drivers was the following:

1) Went to TTY_DRIVER_DYNAMIC_DEV.
2) Changed the "name" I use for my ttys from something generic like ttya0, ttyb0, etc,
to a more specific name of "drivername_tty0", "drivername_tty1", etc, etc.
(ie, in this case, isicom_tty0, isicom_tty1, etc)
3) Added the "tty_register_device()" to my driver to register those "extended" names.
4)Created special UDEV rules to look for <drivername>_tty*, and rename them
to something more common, ie, ttya0, ttya1, etc, etc.

This still doesn't *truly* fix the problem, because UDEV could still run into conflicts on
the renaming, but at least the problem moves from kernel space to user space...

Presumably we could "script" around the duplicate id problem in a UDEV script.
(ie, Maybe if "ttyM0" is already out there, move to "ttyN0" instead.)

Forgive me if this email looks a little choppy, I am coming down with the flu,
and don't really feel too well today...

Scott

ISIcom is the official owner of /dev/ttyM* so the real question as you

E is assigned to stallion so both seem to share it
