Ok, it's two weeks since 2.6.15, and the merge window is closed.
In fact, it already closed yesterday when I was planning on doing the
release, but we had people over for dinner, and things devolved. "The
best-laid plans of mice and kernel-developers.."
Anyway, it's out there now. The ShortLog is pretty readable - if you are
into that kind of stuff - but as usual for an -rc1 release (which has all
the frantic merging going on), it's actually too big to post on the kernel
list due to the size limits. It's weighs in at 4000+ lines and 169kB.
Anyway, if you're a git user, here's what generated the shortlog:
git-rev-list --no-merges --pretty=short v2.6.15..v2.6.16-rc1 |
git-shortlog > ../ShortLog
and you can find the _full_ log on kernel.org as ChangeLog-2.6.16-rc1 if
you want to.
The diffstat is also too big to post. It's also all over the map: there's
actually a fair number of cleanups in there that have affected a lot of
files, as did the new mutexes, for example.
There's also updates for various architectures: powerpc continues the long
slog to a merged tree - now ppc32 is mostly done too, but there's updates
to arm, x86[-64], m68k, frv, ia64, pa-risc, m32r, s390, etc..
And usb, i2c, pcmcia, fbdev, v4l, drm, scsi, alsa, input layer, network
drivers, infiniband.. The tty layer got some clean-ups too (wonder of
wonders).
OCFS2 was merged, fuse updates, fat fixes, and p9fs, XFS and NFS updates.
And largish networking updates: there's a "common netfilter" setup now,
which you'll notice when you do "make config" or equivalent, since a lot
of the netfilter rules now work on ipv4 and/or ipv6 rather than having
separate (and duplicate) versions for each.

I don't know what source code you're compiling, but it's certainly not
2.6.16-rc1:
[jgarzik@pretzel linux-2.6]$ grep -w ata_qc_complete
drivers/scsi/sata_sil.c

Ah sorry, you are right. I still had the experimental patch inside you once

Well, I sorta broke my never build an -rc1 rule.
It seems to be stable so far, but I have a cx88 based video card, a
pcHDTV-3000, and there's 2 problems with the audio. That dma function
was turned off in the .config as the lspci -n didn't report the right
numbers.
1. tvtimes volume control has no effect, in kamix, its now the 'front'
slider. Its actually plugged into the line in jack of a SBLive Audigy
2 Value card.
2. The audio has a definite 'dragging voice coil' sound, very tiresome
to listen to, highly clipped regardless of the gain settings.
Since I do watch tv on this box, I'll go back to 2.6.15.1 until -rc2 is
released.

Can I ask if it's possible to "mark" new features/important changes?
I've maintaining http://wiki.kernelnewbies.org/LinuxChanges
for three releases and the amount of changes is so big it takes hours
to extract the relevant changes, adding some special string in the
description field could help to automate this process and make better
changelogs.
It's not only better for me, I also know there're more people ej: man
page maintainers looking at the full changelogs to find out if
something has changed. There're lot of nice things being merged on
each release, but there's not a way to tell people that those features
exist; even kernel developers don't really know what is going on in
other parts of the kernel. A "useful" changelog is one of the few
things the linux kernel has been missing for ages, IMO ;)
Gene,
Please address these questions to V4L Mailing list, since it is the
better forum for this kind of discussions.

To enable cx88-alsa, you need to have alsa enabled at kernel.
Not all devices supports digital audio on cx2388x. There's a bit at
board's eeprom specifying if digital audio is provided by the board. If
this bit is set, you will see 1741:8801 or 1741:8811 with lspci -n.
If your device doesn't show these numbers, the module will not work.

This is not a kernel question. Anyway, tvtime config file have a field
specifying which input line is selected.

We need more info about this, like video and audio standard, audio mode
(mono, stereo, sap), what device, dmesg. Please provide these info to
v4l ml and we will be happy to help you.

Well, I'd rather not do it in the source control management itself, simply
because people are notoriously bad at deciding what is "important".
It goes something like this: "By definition, anything _you_ work for is
crap and unimportant, while _my_ work is the most important thing ever,
even if it happens to be just fixing typos".
Yeah, that's a bit over-generalized, but it definitely has a kernel of
truth to it. Also, it sometimes turns out that something nobody ever
really thought about turns out to have tons of side effects and needs lots
of fixing.
So asking developers to rate how important their work is just doesn't
really work.
On the other hand, maybe we could have something where people could easily
send hints - as they are merged - about new things, just to help. Also,
we do have automation that can help.
For example, one thing that git does well is that almost all tools can
follow not just a particular file, but a whole subdirectory (or a set of
subdirectories). So what _I_ did when I looked at the shortlog and
realized that it's huge, but I wanted to give something of a view of what
changed, was to do
git log v2.6.15..v2.6.16-rc1 -- fs/ |
git-shortlog |
less -S
which restricts the log to just things that changed in the fs/
subdirectory. That allows you to look at more focused logs, which makes it
easier to dig into a particular feature or area.
[ Side note: you don't have to have just one directory you track: if
you're only interested in a certain set of areas, you can ask for
several specific subdirectories or files:
git log v2.6.15..v2.6.16-rc1 -- fs/ext3/ fs/xfs/
will give the log only for stuff that changed either of those two
directories ]
Also, if you want to judge how big a patch is by the number of files it
changed, that's easy enough to do too:
git-rev-list v2.6.15..v2.6.16-rc1 |
while read id
do
files=$(git-diff-tree -r --name-only $id | wc -l)
echo -e $id $files
done |
sort -k2 -n -r |
git-diff-tree --pretty --stdin -s |
less -S
which admittedly takes a bit of time, but will give you a "log" of every
single commit in the 2.6.15..2.6.16-rc1 range, sorted by how many files it
touches (most files first).
Now, admittedly, "number of files touched" is not a very good
approximation of importance, but it can still be interesting, and it may
be a good approximation for "how invasive was the change", in the sense
that it is a real measure of how likely a commit was to impact other
people.
For example, in this case, the #1 commit is 2e4e6a17:
[NETFILTER] x_tables: Abstraction layer for {ip,ip6,arp}_tables
which actually is one of the more important ones. The other top ones are
(#2..#10):
[PATCH] USB: remove .owner field from struct usb_driver
[PATCH] mutex subsystem, semaphore to mutex: VFS, ->i_sem
[PATCH] TTY layer buffering revamp
[PATCH] I2C: Remove .owner setting from i2c_driver as it's no longer needed
[PATCH] i2c: Drop i2c_driver.flags, 2 of 3
[INET_SOCK]: Move struct inet_sock & helper functions to net/inet_sock.h
[ARM] 3260/1: remove phys_ram from struct machine_desc (part 2)
V4L/DVB (3344a): Conversions from kmalloc+memset to k(z|c)alloc
[PATCH] powerpc: sanitize header files for user space includes
some of which are very core (the TTY layer buffering revamp), others are
more pedestrian and just happen to change a lot.
Btw: a word of warning - git is efficient, but doing things like the above
does require a bit of computing power. The above pipeline to generate the
log sorted by number of files changed takes just over a minute to execute
on a 2.5GHz dual G5 box. I'd also suggest you do this on a tree that you
have recently re-packed, just to avoid the expense of opening millions of
small files.
Now, if you save off the ordered list of commit IDs to a file:
git-rev-list v2.6.15..v2.6.16-rc1 |
while read id
do
files=$(git-diff-tree -r --name-only $id | wc -l)
echo -e $id $files
done |
sort -k2 -n -r > most-invasive-commits
you can do other tricks with git too:
head -25 most-invasive-commits |
git-diff-tree --stdin --pretty -s |
git-shortlog |
less -S
will do a shortlog that contains just the 25 most invasive commits.
Is this useful to you? I dunno. I thought I'd spread the git gospel and
see if somebody gives me a "Halleluja!"

Yes, this could be useful for this task (and looking what files are
created/deleted aswell), but it won't catch everything under the sun -
adding support for a new device in a already existing driver, for
example, or subtle changes in the semantics of a syscall, or adding
yet another sockopt() option; there're many small changes that are
"important".
For now, I just look at the subject line of every mail sent to the
git-commits-head mailing list and decide from a quick look if
the change is important or not. It's a very fast operation so
looking at a couple of hundreds of emails each day doesn't take
more than a couple of minutes; I waste most of the time trying
to understand what the change does to write a comprehensible
description and format everything to put it in the "?$%&/( crappy
HTML forms that wikis use. I agree that asking developers to "mark"
important changes wouldn't work well, so I guess this is the only
100% reliable method. Well, kernel releases are taking two months to
be released, so i guess I should not try to do everything as soon
as it is merged in the first two weeks but do the work in small
chunks.
Linus Torvalds wrote:

Everything seems fine with rc1 on my VIA Based Athlon 64 (64 bit kernel, SuSE
10 base) apart from my USB2 scanner. It's detected just fine (as normal), but
the (32bit) copy of VueScan that I use crawls along during preview like a
constipated tortoise. This is markedly similar to when 2.6.15 is under heavy
CPU load... high speed USB transfers slow to a crawl then too but everything
is fine at other times.
dmesg etc looks ok. I'd appreciate it if anyone has any thoughts?

Does this mean 2.6.16 will have high res timers?

Important is what is important for all members of an "independent" group.
We already have a small example: kerneltraffic. Though it's just one person
and therefore possibly biased, the magazine picks out what's [deemed]
important.
Typos don't really advance to important IMO, even if they fix oopses (e.g.
a missing ! somewhere). More important are world news, news that Joe
Default User thinks is good - "full double preemption", "O(0.5) scheduler"
and other illusory things. Just think of if you had to commercially sell
a Linux kernel CD what features you would print on the cover.
As for me, it was important to see SCHED_BATCH going in, as I started
to look through the big changelog :)

Well, I may have barked prematurely about the audio quality. I found
that turning off the max boost in the gain settings in the tvtime
menu's got it back within the cards headroom and the audio from tvtime
is just fine now. My remaining concern is that the onscreen volume
control in tvtime has disconnected itself from reality, doing nothing
to any slider in the kamix screen, or to the audio level. My version
of kmix is too old to see this Audigy 2 card correctly, so I had to
switch to kamix. That may be the same situation with tvtime, which
otherwise Just Works(TM) here.

Maybe the way to make modern-style linux development (post 2.5) more
manageable for mere mortals is to stop integrating things when the
shortlog is so big that it can't be posted to the mailing list? Less
changes, easier to see if you are able to help testing ;)

Hooray! Finally. ;)
Does this require modprobing of the modules by hand, or is there a version
of iptables in the pipe that knows how to do this? I checked the CVS snapshot
directory on ftp.netfilter.org last night, and the latest one there didn't
know about this yet.

<lots of irony>
Ridiculous, we'll never get there! Just look at 2.6.16-rc1 -
oh, there was no shortlog posted?
</lots of irony>
You probably don't know the mailing list, but I think it does not accept
mails beyond 40K (some guess), but for sure it does not let 100KB through.
The 2.6.16-rc1 shortlogs would still need to shrank by 1.3MB to get where
you want. However, if you read the description of [PATCH]es, you are
already there (which is, though, a combination of goes-in and stays-out).

Strange.
I have tried to reproduce without luck...
Can you please do above steps again with V=1 added like this:
ls -l /dev/null
make distclean V=1
ls -l /dev/null
Not a fix - but do not build as root....
Sam
Which gcc version should I use, now that gcc-2.95.3 can't compile
2.6.16-rc1 anymore? gcc-3.3 as mentioned in the patch?
Thanks,

Avoid 4.0.0 and 4.0.1, but other than that, I don't think there are really
any huge mistakes to be made. You'll be very hard-pressed to even find any
of the old buggy early-3.x series compilers.

The modules have aliases for their old names, so they should get
autoloaded. The matches and targets that didn't exist for IPv6
before need new extensions in userspace before they can be used
though.

Nothing has changed in usbfs that might cause this that I know of. Can
you use git to bisect what patch caused it?

alternative is to just use any compiler that came with a distro, and is
at least of 3.2 vintage. (the 3.3 thing is mostly for arm; 3.2 on arm
seemed to not have been a good thing). Distros usually put in fixes to
gcc that are from higher/later versions, eg gcc.gnu.org releases
sometimes have a few bad bugs at release time that will get fixed later,
while the distros put those fixes in immediately.

I just tried this on a freshly unpacked and configured (but not
compiled) 2.6.16-rc1, and I observe a similarly strange, though
different, behavior:
hyperion:/home/khali/src/linux-2.6.16-rc1 # ls -l /dev/null
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 2006-01-18 09:30 /dev/null
hyperion:/home/khali/src/linux-2.6.16-rc1 # make distclean V=1

See the permissions change? I wonder what caused that.
The trace above is from a SuSE 10.0 on x86_64. Then I tried on my
laptop which has a Slackware 10.2 on i386, kernel had been built in the
directory, and result is the same:
root@arrakis:/home/khali/src/linux-2.6.16-rc1> ls -l /dev/null
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 2006-01-18 08:22 /dev/null
root@arrakis:/home/khali/src/linux-2.6.16-rc1> make distclean V=1
(...)
root@arrakis:/home/khali/src/linux-2.6.16-rc1> ls -l /dev/null
crwxrwxrwx 1 root root 1, 3 2006-01-18 08:22 /dev/null
root@arrakis:/home/khali/src/linux-2.6.16-rc1>
So there is something weird here, which seems to be rather
system-independent, although I can't explain why Eyal and I observe
different weirdnesses.
> Not a fix - but do not build as root....
I second Sam here - never build anything as root, kernel or anything
else. This is never needed and possibly dangerous.

When the above command is executed gcc is actually called two times due
to following lines:
scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/Makefile
HOST_EXTRACFLAGS:= $(shell $(CONFIG_SHELL) $(check-lxdialog) -ccflags)
HOST_LOADLIBES := $(shell $(CONFIG_SHELL) $(check-lxdialog) -ldflags $(HOSTCC))
The shell script check-dialog.sh is called which again do:
echo "main() {}" | gcc -xc - -o /dev/null
And it seems that gcc will trash /dev/null in your setup when doing
this.
One fix would be to avoid the two lines during distclean,
but I may have to resort to a temporary file.
Could you please confirm that the above command is the one that trashes
/dev/null, then I will try to cook up something better.

Will do. May take a while though.

I confirm that this one line is causing the trouble:
root@arrakis:~> ls -l /dev/null
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 2006-01-18 13:34 /dev/null
root@arrakis:~> echo "main() {}" | gcc -xc - -o /dev/null
root@arrakis:~> ls -l /dev/null
crwxrwxrwx 1 root root 1, 3 2006-01-18 13:34 /dev/null
root@arrakis:~>
This is with both gcc 3.3.6 from Slackware 10.2 and gcc 4.0.2 from Suse
10.0. Didn't try with self-compiled gcc versions on these systems.
BTW, I have noticed recently an "a.out" file at the root of my linux
sources tree when I build a kernel.
-rwxr-xr-x 1 khali users 11K 2006-01-16 19:51 a.out*
Running it doesn't seem to do anything useful. Is this file generated
here on purpose? Is it somehow related to the current issue?
Thanks,

Following patch fix it.
We now evaluate the value of the variabls only when needed.
And gcc do not use '-o /dev/null' since this is not good.

Ouch, I suggested using /dev/null instead of post-removing a.out ^_^

gcc -o /dev/null is also used by cc-option and in some other
places (at least in 2.6.15). (For me this doesn't trash the
device node, it just gives it execute permission.)

This ain't exactly the same command Sam had me test earlier today. This
one breaks my /dev/null:
echo "main() {}" | gcc -xc - -o /dev/null
But this one doesn't:
echo 'main() {}' | gcc -xc -c - -o /dev/null
I.e., the additional -c seems to make a difference (at least in my
case.) Sam, maybe that's an easier and more efficient fix than
resorting to a temporary file?
Thanks,

Right. It gets chmodded 777 here then.
I'd poke on gcc for that, or rather, ld (binutils).

Right.
-c tell gcc not to link.
But in the lxdialog case we need to execute the link step, because
what we really try to do is to check if gcc can find a specific
library in the search path.
So in contradiction to the cc-option case where we chank for an option,
we need to perform the link step here.

Will -print-file-name not do the trick for you?
$ gcc -print-file-name=libcurses.so | grep -q /
$ echo $?
0
$ gcc -print-file-name=libfoobar.a | grep -q /
$ echo $?

And indeed nothing had changed. There was a runaway process using 100% of the
CPU causing the symptoms. After gently bashing my boot scripts around
everything seems to work just fine. So, RC1 seems 100% on my setup.
Sorry for the noise.

Much better - thanks!
I will push out a new path tomorrow.

Just to be sure, something like this will work well, and bring you down
to one program executed per test:
$(findstring /,$(shell gcc -print-file-name=libcurses.so))
You have to check for a "/" in the output, as -print-file-name will
print its input unmodified if it can't actually find the file you
specify.

Eew. Yes, with root, I get it with both compilers:
root@luther:~# ls -l /dev/null
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 1, 3 1994-07-17 19:46 /dev/null
root@luther:~# echo "main() {}" | gcc -xc - -o /dev/null

crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 1, 3 1994-07-17 19:46 /dev/null
root@luther:~# echo "main() {}" | /usr/local/gcc4/bin/gcc -xc - -o
/dev/null
root@luther:~# ls -l /dev/null
crwxrwxrwx 1 root sys 1, 3 1994-07-17 19:46 /dev/null
Obviously gcc shouldn't do such at thing, but just as obviously, don't
build the kernel as root.

New features are easy, they usually result in changes to the config
file. You can learn a lot with "diff" that way.
However, you really need to read the patches to see what they are
supposed to change. That's a long and thankless job, but it's a wiki,
right? So ask a few people to just look at parts of it and write
comments on what they see. Few for filesystems, few for networks, stuff
like that. And a few to look at "other."
If you do all the work it's not a wiki it's a blog...

As postmaster, I strongly disagree. Having to split up
large patches is a feature.

That's not the (main) reason why patches get split up. They're
split up into logical incremental changes to aid review.
Also, you should be able to apply the first half of the patch set
and get a working kernel - this aids debugging since you can find
the small set of changes which caused the problem.

There seems to be a usb printer problem in 2.6.16-rc1 (amd64)
I can print a page or two of graphichs (A4 maps), and then
my syslog fills up with these:
kernel: drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: error -19 reading printer status
It is then time to power-cycle the printer, restart cups and
maybe get another page out. Or maybe not. Going back to 2.6.15 I don't
see such problems, the printer cranks out page after page with ease.
Known issue, or is some USB debugging in place?

Where's that patch? As I understand it, this issue is still not fixed
in Linus' tree, while it really should be before 2.6.16 is released.
