I cannot access bugzilla.linux-nfs.org, it it does not send a "account
verification token email" to me.

Apologies for the type, it should be "who", not "how".
But the problem remains, I still did not get an account creation token
via email for *ANY* of my email addresses. It appears account creation
is broken.

Trond owns it. But he's already showed me the SMTP log from
Sunday night: a token was sent out. Have you checked your
spam folders?

I'm closing it down. It has been run and paid for by me, but I don't

Understood about lack of resources, but is there no-one who can
take over for you, at least in the short term? Yanking it out
without warning is not cool.
Does this announcement include git.linux-nfs.org <http://git.linux-nfs.org/> and
wiki.linux-nfs.org <http://wiki.linux-nfs.org/> as well?
As this site is a long-time community-used resource, it would
be fair if we could come up with a transition plan if it truly
needs to go away.

Ever since the NFSv4 code went into the kernel, I've been telling you
that bugzilla.linux-nfs.org is deprecated. We don't need 2 bug tracking
resources, and bugzilla.kernel.org is the more general option that
tracks all Linux kernel related issues.

I don't recall that, and the usual courteous thing to do is
put a banner on the log in page for a time, or at least
warn folks that the site going away imminently.

bugzilla.linux-nfs.org <http://bugzilla.linux-nfs.org/> is for upstream nfs-utils bugs too,
and I think there were even one or two TI-RPC related bugs
there as well. So, not redundant in the least.
But I see you've already taken the whole thing down, so I
guess that's moot.
I can only regard the tone and suddenness of this removal
as a personal jab, since you know very well that Jeff and
I were still using the site and that we had bugs and to-dos
in flight.
Next time, if you have a complaint like this, please bring
it to me first and we can work it out. Jerking me around
is a Dick Move, and just needless.

This is a community... I'm sure we can figure something out.
But please turn it back on.

Could you please tone it down? I don't think it was intended as a
"personal jab". Sounds more like Trond is in pain.
But I'm also sour about this, but for different reasons: There is no
single altruistic company who easily can help out quickly since Sun
Microsystems went down.
I bitterly remember the LinuxTag/LinuxWorld conferences here in
Germany where they were singing mocking songs about SUN&Solaris,
"Linux WON, we'll take over the world' blabla. They forgot who helped
them, and were always nice to the Opensource world.
Who is left now?
SUN is gone, HP&IBM mostly look at money (that includes Redhat, who
now gets ruined by IBM's bean counters), and who is left and will
altruistically help out in such a situation?
Thanks,
Martin

I wonder if something like a gitlab / gitea instance would suit our
needs? That would get us a combined git hosting, wiki, and issue
tracker in one web application which might make overall maintenance
easier (once we get through what I assume would be a tedious initial
migration).

I would prefer to chew off my leg (yeah, insert picture of some gore
horror movie!) before I have to touch gitlab/github agan. The *ONLY*
reason why I touch github at all is because the kofemann/Roland's
Windows NFSv4 client sources are hosted there.
Beyond that I STRONGLY prefer BUGZILLA.
Maybe we create http://www.nfs.org or http://www.nfsv4.org, and host a bugzilla for
Linux NFSv4, Windows NFSv4 etc?

Who owns nfs.org, nfsv4.org? Maybe we can host the nfs utils, spec
stuff, libtitpc, the Windows driver source there?

I would prefer to chew off my leg (yeah, insert picture of some gore
horror movie!) before I have to touch gitlab/github agan. The *ONLY*
reason why I touch github at all is because the kofemann/Roland's
Windows NFSv4 client sources are hosted there.
Beyond that I STRONGLY prefer BUGZILLA.
Maybe we create http://www.nfs.org or http://www.nfsv4.org, and host a bugzilla for
Linux NFSv4, Windows NFSv4 etc?

Trond is the CTO of a start-up storage vendor. He's not
some kid in a basement.
If Trond is in pain, he can ask for help like an adult.
Ripping down a community resource without any warning
or discussion is not adult behavior.
As has been stated already, and bears repeating: Trond,
if you want to step back, that is fine. But folks are
clearly not prepared for this community resource to
simply vanish. Let's come up with a transition plan.

Let's not conflate the needs of the NFS community as
a whole with the needs of Linux NFS developers. The
folks who need to step up here are the Linux
distributors. We also have a variety of source forges
like GitHub and GitLab that are designed to provide
these services.

It's not that bleak, IMO.

I'd be comfortable with that type of service to replace linux-nfs.org <http://linux-nfs.org/>;
they could also take care of user management, access control, and
security issues.

So far, I've heard a lot of 'we should', and a lot of 'we could'.
What I have yet to hear are the magic words "I volunteer to help
maintain these services".
So here is the deal:
I will turn the bugzilla back on, however unless I hear someone pipe up
to say that they are willing to work with me to maintain these
services, then the bugzilla and the wiki get turned off permanently on
1st March 2024. The git repo is nowhere near as much work as the wiki +
bugzilla that require outbound mail services and anti-spam measures, so
I don't see a need for help with that, and am happy to continue
maintaining it without any further help.
I'm also happy to continue financing the site without needing further
help for that. This isn't a question of money, but of commitment from
the people who claim they need the resource. I no longer have the spare
time to ensure that commitment.

I volunteer to help. I can do as much or as little as you prefer.
And I volunteer to lead an effort to either:
a) find a replacement issue tracking service, or
b) find a way to archive the content of the bugzilla if we agree
there is no more need for a bugzilla.linux-nfs.
Or both.
There is no way for us to know how much effort it takes if you
suffer in silence, my friend.

The point is that email has evolved over the 18 years since I set up
the very first linux-nfs.org. I have not had time to keep up with the
requirements of adding support for DMARC, SPF, etc. which is why
Cedric's account setup email is probably in his spam folder, assuming
that the gmail server even accepted it at all.
Furthermore, both the wikimedia and bugzilla instances are far from
running the most recent code versions and I'm sure there are plenty of
well known security holes etc to exploit. So both code bases have been
needing an upgrade for a while now.
Finally, the VM itself is still running RHEL/CentOS 7, and I'd like to
see it migrated to a platform that is is still maintained.
All these tasks would need help from the person (or people?) who
volunteers to maintain the bugzilla + wiki services. Some of them would
need to be 100% owned by that person, and others (like the platform
upgrade) would need a lot of coordination with me.
IOW: I'm not advocating either way. I can understand wanting to migrate
away from the current setup to something that is maintained by someone
else. However if anyone does wants to take on the job of helping to
maintain the current setup, then they need to know that it will involve
real work.

Understood, and accepted.
Finding a hosted bugzilla (such as devzing.com <http://devzing.com/>) and migrating
the active bugs there would help with all these issues. I haven't
yet looked for hosted wiki services, but I'll bet we can handle
that in a similar fashion.
It is also sensible to have one place for kernel bugs, as you
pointed out. It's the upstream user space issues where there is
likely still a need for an issue tracker independent of the
kernel.org <http://kernel.org/> one.
There are links to bugzilla.linux-nfs.org <http://bugzilla.linux-nfs.org/> bugs in the kernel's
commit log that we need to continue handling somehow -- a read-
only bugzilla instance, if nothing else, might be easy to
maintain for that purpose, but there could be other ways to
deal with that.
