Subject: [Bluez-users] Piconet problems

Hi,

I'm trying to create a simple piconet consisting of a master and=
two slaves. I'm using three Digicom Palladio
dongles.
My packages li=
st is:
- bluez-libs-2.8-1.i386.rpm
- bluez-bluefw-1.0-1.i386.rpm =0D
=
- bluez-hcidump-1.10-1.i386.rpm
- bluez-sdp-1.5-1.i386.rpm
- bluez=
-pan-1.1-1.i386.rpm
- bluez-utils-2.8-1.i386.rpm
- bridge-utils-0.9=
.6-1.i386.rpm

On master side I type:
# hciconfig hci0 up
# pa=
nd --listen --master --role GN

On the first slave I type:
# hcic=
onfig hci0 up
# hcitool inq
# pand --connect <master_bt_addr>
# =
ifconfig bnep0 10.10.10.2 broadcast 10.10.10.255 netmask 255.255.255.0 =0D
=

if I type
# hcitool inq
I obtain:

Inquiry failed.: Device=
or resource busy

On the second slave I type:
# hciconfig hci0 u=
p
# hcitool inq
I only obtain the master bt_addr.
# pand --conne=
ct <master_bt_addr>

and
# ifconfig bnep0 10.10.10.3 broadcast 10=
.10.10.255 netmask 255.255.255.0

Unfortunally I obtain:

SIOCS=
IFADDR: No such device
bnep0: unknown interface: No such device
SIO=
CSIFBRDADDR: No such device
bnep0: unknown interface: No such device =0D
=
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

Can someone tell me what is wrong? =
Thanks.
Jers

the bluez-sdp, bluez-pan and bluez-bluefw packages are deprecated. Get
yourself newer versions of bluez-libs and bluez-utils.

What is the output of "hciconfig -a" for these dongles?

Regards

Marcel

Hi Jers,

> I'm very sorry, but still it does not work!

you have all the information needed to make this sucessful working. It
works at least for me in a similar setup. You can of course try to get
yourself a set of dongles where all of them HCI 16.4 or later.

Regards

Marcel

you run into a page timeout (error code 0x04) with your second
connection. Why don't you use hcid? It will bring up your devices with
the correct settings. Make sure that the device with the newest firmware
is your desired master device.

Hi Marcel,

At the moment, my dongles seem to work better. I tried agai=

to create a piconet (1 master,2 slaves) but I got the same problem of=
the early stage, i.e.,
I can only create the first connection and inter=

show us the hcidump output and leave it to us to interpret it. And btw
what about using a 2.6.10 kernel? I can't tell you anything about any
vendor kernel.

Hi Marcel,

I thank you for your time but, I'm sorry, I can't displa=

I changed my dongles. Their firmware is HCI 16.14: =0D

0x1) HCI Rev: 0x33c LMP Ver: 1.1 (0x1) LMP Subver: 0x33c

I installed linux again (Mandra=
ke 9.1, kernel 2.4.21) and the upgrated BlueZ packages in accordance with=
readme
files of each packages. I tried to create a simple connection. =

On the master side, I run:

modprobe bnep
modprobe l2cap

pand --listen --role GN

On the slave side, I run; =0D
=

modprobe bnep
modprobe l2cap
hciconfig hci0 up
pand -c <master_a=

At first, "hcidump -x" dispayed packets sent by the pand comman=

I ca=

I hope =

Thanks. Jers

send us the outputs of "hciconfig -a" for all of your devices. And don't
play with "hcitool cc". If you wanna test stuff then use l2test.

Run "hcidump -x" as root and show us the output.

Hi Marc=
el,
hcid was not running. I've solved the inconsistency but no my proble=
m.

Hi tried to create connection on slave1 side by
# hcitool cc <mast=
er_addr>
and so
# hcitool con
lists me the established connection.
=0D
=
After that, I tried to create the second connection on slave2 side by run=
ning the same command (hcitool cc <master_addr>) and I obtain the followi=
ng error:
# Can't create connectio: input/output error.

Besides, it's=
impossible to establish any other possible combinations of link among t=
he three device.
Can I hope to find a solution?
Thank you. Jers

this is not needed, because you use "pand --master ..." and this is
enought to force the role switch.

I know that. Maybe I wasn't acc=
urate in the description of my problem. I'm
sorry...
The above script i=
s the hcid.conf file of the master. For slaves I have "lm
accept".

I =
want to create a piconet with a single master and two slaves.
In a previ=
ous corrispondance, you suggested me:
- to upgrade my bluez packages. I =
did that.
- to check the limitation for firmware pre HCI 16.4. I did tha=
t.

- to check the link policy because the "hciconfig -a" command showe=
d it no
set for any device. This is my current problem.

"hciconfig -a=
" still shows me that there is no link policy set for any
device but, fo=
r all dongles, in the hcid.conf I have

# Default link policy
# non=
e - no specific policy
# rswitch - allow role switch
# hold -=
allow hold mode
# sniff - allow sniff mode
# park - allow par=
k mode
#
#lp hold,sniff;
#
lp rswitch,hold,sniff,park;

so I suppos=
e, but I'm not sure, that this can be the cause of my problem.
Is it pos=
sible? If so, what can I do to solve this inconsistency?
Otherwise, what=
do you suggest me to do?
Thank you so much.
Regards. Jers

you changed this. Why? There can't be two device with a master role in
the same a piconet.

Everytime when the "hcitool con" shows me the connection, it lasts a few =

Are you sure the connection is established? The bnep devices only show up
after the connection was established so you cannot ifconfig them as long as
it is not up yet (during search etc...).

Hi Marcel,

I'm still trying to create a simple piconet with a master a=
nd two slaves. I upgrated my bluez and, on your website, I red the firmwa=
re of my dongles (Digicom Palladio CSR) is fit for my aims.
Now the situ=
ation is as follows:

On the three sides I type

# modprobe bnep
=0D
=
On the master side:

# brctl addbr pan0
# ifconfig pan0 10.0.0.1
# br=
ctl setfd pan0 0
# brctl stp pan0 off
# pand --listen --master --role =
GN

On the slave1 side:
# pand --connect <master bt_addr>
# ifconfig =
bnep0 10.0.0.2

In most cases I obtain the following error:

SIOCSIFA=
DDR: No such device
bnep0: unknown interface: No such device

even if =
the command
#hcitool con
shows me an active connection.

When I obtai=
n the connection I continue:

On the slave1 side:
# route add default =
gw 10.0.0.1

On the master side:
# brctl addif pan0 bnep0
# ifconfigt=
bnep0 0.0.0.0

On the slave2 side:
# pand --connect <master bt_addr>=0D
=
# ifconfig bnep0 10.0.0.3

and I always obtain the same error:

SIOCS=
IFADDR: No such device
bnep0: unknown interface: No such device

even =
if the command
#hcitool con
shows me an active connection.

You point=
ed me out there is no link policy set but my file /etc/Bluetooth/hcid.c=
onf is:

# Default settings for HCI devices
device {
# Local device =
name
# %d - device id
# %h - host name
name "BlueZ (%d)";

#=
Local device class
class 0x3e0100;

# Default packet type
#pkt_ty=
pe DH1,DM1,HV1;

# Inquiry and Page scan
iscan enable; pscan enable;=

# Default link mode
# none - no specific policy
# accept =
- always accept incoming connections
# master - become master on inco=
ming connections,
# deny role switch on outgoing connections=

#
lm accept,master;
#
#lm accept;

# Default link policy
# =
none - no specific policy
# rswitch - allow role switch
# ho=
ld - allow hold mode
# sniff - allow sniff mode
# park - =
allow park mode
#
#lp hold,sniff;
#
lp rswitch,hold,sniff,park;=0D
=

# Authentication and Encryption
#auth enable;
#encrypt enable;
}=0D
=

How can I modify the link policy? Might this inconsistency be the cause=
of my problems?
Apologizes for my English.
Regards. Jers
